I think the fact that we moan makes us fit in even that little bit more - isn't it one of the British national pastimes - especially about the weather?  ;)

Why Hello himself is having a right moan, thereby proving my point.  :P

Also with my owning a home here (and paying the mortgage, council taxes, etc - not to mention the £2,500+ in immigration & citizenship fees that I paid to be here with my husband), I'm really not sure whose home I'm supposed to go and occupy other than my own here in the UK?!

I will say as an American my family is immigrants...My Great-grandfather started it when he went to New York in 1924 and got a job in the USA and then called for the rest of his family.
So honestly when do you consider someone not an immigrant?

They were from Ireland and lots of people moved and settled back back in the day...So unless your entire line of family was born in the same country and never came from anywhere else in my opinion - everyone is some what an immigrant.

Personally, I think someone is not an immigrant in the country they were born in, regardless of where their parents are from.  This is part of what is difficult about immigration, because the children of immigrants to the UK are British, just as the children of immigrants to the US are American.

I do agree as I don't think I am an immigrant to the US.  I was more wondering where Hello. drew the line on who was an immigrant?
My theory is everyone starts somewhere at some time its where you end up that matters.

Agree ;)

And if you build a life in the place you end up and become a citizen there, then you cease to be an immigrant, I say.

I just think it's funny because the English people I know complain so much more about the weather and drunken bums, noisy neighbours, etc, than I ever do!  :P I guess when they (or I) feel that way, we should all just go home and get into our pajamas and drink Horlicks, or even Ovaltine.  ;)

I love JibJab!
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Many of you have clearly not respected the topic and jumped on the left wing bandwagon, presuming that any mention of the word ‘immigration’ therefore has immediate race implications that suggest immediate deportation of an important aspect of British culture.

Truly pathetic to be honest, with many of you clearly not able to hold any sort of debate into the subject at all- and as immigrants!

Seriously?!?! You come onto an American IMMIGRATION board and post that clap trap and expect people to rise to the bait...dude you are a few sandwiches short of a picnic  ;D

I mean really, I would expect a troll like you on some other nationality boards, but this one?!?! You made me laugh...HARD!

Oh and for what it's worth, I am British born and bred and can honestly say I am ashamed to be lumped in the same nationality as you right now :-/
Kicking around...looking for answers :)

Well, to be honest, if you want to see a bunch of people complaining about the place they moved to, you should go to the British Expats forum.  I am not saying we don't whinge and moan at times, but for the most part, it's limited to certain areas of the website, and it's usually a vent.  There's usefulness in venting occassionally, but I think taking it to excess is counter-productive, and allows you to wallow in the negatives of a situation rather than coping in a mature fashioned.  However, I don't think that people can understand what it's like to be an immigrant until they are one.  Not everyone has a rough time, but even people like me who probably adapted better than most has their moments.

That said, if the OP doesn't like what's said on this website, he or she can always NOT READ IT.  I am pretty sure there are few people here (if any) who are taking advantage of the system.  And contrary to popular belief, we aren't eligible for benefits straight off the boat.  I am not sure what sort of debate is expected if any.  He or she stated their opinion and I really doubt he or she really expected much agreement on a board for immigrants.  And what exactly was there of substance to debate?  His or her personal opinion on immigration?  Random posters here and their posts whinging about drinking culture or not being able to go to the shops after 5 on a Sunday?  The vast majority of this site is entirely positive, so much so that British people have been known to get emotional when they read threads like "I need to hear good things about the UK" and "What would you miss if you left the UK".  Some of the same posters who have the occasional complaint about one thing or another have posted some wonderful things about this country.  And some of them have gone on to become British citizens themselves.

And I hate Horlicks.  I used to love it back when I had rare access to it, but it is such a weird, cloying combination of sweet, malty and thick.  Bleurgh. I am not sure why I ever liked it, but I loved it until I moved here.

Oh dear. Can't we just hug it out and call it a day? And then go have some biscuits with tea, coffee, ovaltine or horlicks?

We're all different in some ways, but also the same in many. People won't agree on lots of things.

But, this forum is just a place for us to come at the end of our days and just vent and express our feelings. Most of us don't want to "go home". I'm sure there are some, and those that do, say that they do and do it. Those of us that want to stay just like sharing our experiences with each other, getting sage advice from those that have come before us.

Just my 2p.

Hmmm- First 15 minutes of the office I heard:

4 Brits complain about the rain and no sun
2 Brits moan about how after the bank holiday on Monday there aren't anymore until Christmas
1 Brit gripe about the Tesco being shut for works...

 ;D
