I've done it with a nice loaf of bread from the local baker, some black beans I bought dried and then cooked with a couple of chilis... feta cheese on top and my own chips on the side.

Can't do the sweet baked beans, though, never liked 'em in the States either.

I have recently become a Beans on Toast convert, thanks to this thread and hubby's fine cooking. ;)  Whereas I formerly turned up my nose at the idea of beans on toast, when I saw the suggestions for having it with cheese -- I told hubs that I would try it like that. We ended up having it last weekend & then again today for lunch.  My thought today was it's actually a little like a bean pizza...you've got your tomato sauce (with the beans), the cheese, and bread!

I tried it with cheese between the bread and beans last weekend. It was delicious!! It helped that it was in a lovely place over a camp stove, under the stars.

I just got 2 cans of Bush's vegetarian baked beans as a gift.  Ooooo.  Too good for beans on toast, though.  I'm going to make my baked bean casserole to go w/a fresh loaf of bread for tea.  Mmmmm.

Have you seen the Heinz baked beans pizzas in the freezer section?

Has anyone tried them?  I love beans on toast....

Haven't seen baked bean pizzas but a friend of mine once served up baked bean lasagne for dinner!
