Wasn't it Jack in the Box that had the grilled sourdough burgers too? I loved those!

I know this is sacriligious but the best burger I've had in London was at the Hard Rock Casino.  And Ultimate Burger chain is decent too but I wouldn't go so far as to call it the "ultimate burger."

Question: why is it that nobody knows how to make a rare or medium burger?  Most burgers I get here are served well-done or cooked so long that it resembles a hockey puck. I'm rarely asked: "how would you like that cooked?" I thought maybe it had something to do with leftover mad cow disease paranoia.

It's that way in the states anymore as well.  You practically have to sign a release in order to get a burger that is OTHER than 'well' done.  I think it's more to do w/the risk of bacterial infection such as e coli.  Lucky for me, I only like my burgers cooked all the way through (no pink for me!) so it's not a big deal if they don't ask me how I'd like it cooked.

This is so true.  In Michigan we now have on all our menus a disclaimer about eating meat, fish, or eggs that are not cooked all the way through.  Those some places, nicer resturants, will still ask how you want your burger.  Simon likes stuff very rare (bleck) so I don't know how he manages in England.  I noticed the same thing that every bit of meat is over cooked for me, I prefer medium rare myself.

Do they do that with steaks as well? I always remember them asking how you want them done. I don't like it red, or even pink, I want it brown all the way through, so I would say well done.

Yes - it has to be on EVER menu now!  Some places even have snyde little remarks next to the quote - it's pretty silly actually.  But most places will cook anything the way you want it.  It's just the State making themselves feel like they are protecting people.   ::)

I totally don't believe this!! Guess I've been away too long.......do they put these instructions on the raw meat that you buy? 'You can only purchase it, if you cook it ACCORDING TO THESE DIRECTIONS!!!!" Or we will come after you........... ;D

Thankfully they aren't to THAT point yet!!!  Actually, wait, let me look at the roast I have in the fridge....

Sure enough - they got the packaged meat too!!

Label on my roast:

Safe Handling Instructions
This product was prepared from inspected and passed meat and/or poultry.  Some food products may contain bacteria that could cause illness if the product is mishandled or cooked improperly.  For your protection, follow these safe handling instructions.  Keep refrigerated or frozen.  Thaw in refrigerator or microwave. Keep raw meet and poultry separate from other foods, Wash working surfaces (including cutting boards), utensils and hands after touching raw meat or poultry.  Cook thoroughly. Keep hot foods hot, Refrigerate leftovers immediately or discard.

That should save them from frivolous lawsuits!!   ::)
