No egg nog?
« on: November 17, 2005, 03:15:27 PM »
One of my favorite things about the holidays is the egg nog! And, egg nog with Kahlua. Mmmm...

But, my husband said there is no eggnog here! I couldn't believe it so I tried looking online and I found out that it orginated in England and I found recipes for it but no evidence that it's actually sold here during the holidays. He's never had it in his life and thinks it doesn't exist here. I thought maybe it's just not something his family ever bought so he never noticed it.

So, is it true? Am I going to miss my eggnog this year? :(

Here is a recipe. I have never made it, but it doesn't look to difficult.

INGREDIENTS:
4 cups milk
5 whole cloves
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
12 egg yolks
1 1/2 cups sugar
2 1/2 cups light rum
4 cups light cream
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

DIRECTIONS:
Combine milk, cloves, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and cinnamon in a saucepan, and heat over lowest setting for 5 minutes. Slowly bring milk mixture to a boil.
In a large bowl, combine egg yolks and sugar. Whisk together until fluffy. Whisk hot milk mixture slowly into the eggs. Pour mixture into saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly for 3 minutes, or until thick. Do not allow mixture to boil. Strain to remove cloves, and let cool for about an hour.
Stir in rum, cream, 2 teaspoon vanilla, and nutmeg. Refrigerate overnight before serving.

I just posted this recipe on the vanilla pudding thread. I will be trying it soon, I just realized I forgot rum extract from the shop.
NO EGG EGG NOG

INGREDIENTS:

1 pkg instant vanilla pudding
1 1/2 quarts milk
2 1/2 tsp rum extract
1/2 tsp nutmeg
PREPARATION:

Blend pudding mix and 2 cups of milk, following directions on pudding package. Chill for 5 minutes. Add the rum and nutmeg, then mix in the rest of the milk. Chill and serve.

So, was that a confirmation that there is no egg nog sold in the UK?

Yes, you have to make your own egg nog if you want any, unless you go to Starbucks and order an eggnog latte. It is not generally sold here.

Yup, it's just not here.  :(
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Ugghhh!!!!!!!  I was looking for egg nog today too!!!  I'm having a tree trimming party (something I used to do back home) and wanted to serve it!!!  I think it may be too difficult to make with all of the other moving stuff....  Alas, I may have to just do mulled wine......

Ladies, lay in your supply of M&S mulled wine.  Last year, they sold out early.   :\\\'(

Thanks for the recipes. I'll have to try to make my own. Never imagined myself making egg nog before! lol

What is mulled wine like? I might have to try some.

There are tons of recipes for mulled wine. It is essentially a combination of citrus (1 lemon or orange) and spices.

My favorite spices are cinnamon (6 sticks), cloves (12 whole), nutmeg (1/4 tsp), ginger (1/8 tsp), and allspice (1/8 tsp).

Combine the spices and citrus in a dry red wine, such as Burgundy. Add 1/4 cup sugar. Heat this through for at least 15 minutes, but don't boil. I will sometimes use my crockpot, and let it simmer all day.

Use an inexpensive wine for this recipe. Don't get something that tastes absolutely horrible, but this is the time to look at the bottom wine shelf at the grocery store.
