Even though my head knows that Starbucks is a total rip-off, my heart tells me I still love it. We all have our weaknesses.  :P

Probably the most widely-anticipated winter holiday drink. People start asking about it in September, but on average these aren't sold until mid-November sometime. The drink is real eggnog, mixed with a tiny bit of milk to help it steam (Don't bother asking for non-fat. Trust me on this.), espresso, and nutmeg on top. Eggnog makes a hell of a racket when it's steamed -- sounds like an F-16 taking off, so be ready to plug your ears if you're lurking near the espresso bar.

And that site says they make Eggnog Frappuccinos! Oooh, I must ask for one when I am next in town.  :D

the egg nogg lattes are ok but i am really partial to the gingerbread lattes.  YUMMA!!!!

Mmmm, me too! Those are SO good. And you can get them with skim milk which makes me feel a tiny bit less guilty - egg nog is so good but it's so bloody fattening!!!

I could have sworn that dh told me there is egg nog here but it's called something different. What the hell was it? He's out right now, but I'll ask him later....

I think it's called Advocaat, Anne.  It's found in the spirits aisle.

Hehe...it does indeed sound like an F-16. I work part time at a Barnes & Noble, which serves Starbucks coffee in the cafe. You can hear them steaming the egg nog clear across the store (which is rather large).

Have to watch it if too much milk goes in, though. I prefer them straight egg nog, with maybe a little bit of milk, but...they're so yummy. Tried making one at home once and it didn't turn out so good, most likely due to my milk steamer. :)

Heard a rumor from a fellow N American coworker that Harvey Nichols sells the Eggnog in their refrigerated section at the food hall. I'm heading there tomorrow while the turkey's in the oven (Saturday is Thanksgiving for me, had to work yesterday) and will come back with full report.

Harvey Nichols is not selling Eggnog this year. At least it isn't stocked yet and the girl we asked said they didn't sell it last year so might not this year.

However Sainsbury's has Advocaat. Is it worth investigation?

PS. I asked the Starbucks guy to show me the container the Eggnog came in. I know some Starbucks sell their own mix products so will soon investigate. After all, it is only for once a year.

IMHO, drinking Advocaat is like drinking canned tea -- just not up to scratch.  Then again I'm used to having access to a local dairy which produced fresh egg nog.

Aldi also sells Advocaat, bought a bottle Thursday and haven't tried it yet.  Think it was £3.99 there, also saw it at Tesco but twice the price.

Oh, let us know what you think! I looked at a bottle at Tesco but didn't buy it. It didn't seem eggnogg-like to me and I was a bit afraid of it. lol I noticed it doesn't have any sort of spices (whatever all the specks are in eggnogg) and was more orange colored. But I guess the color probably has to do with the color of egg yolks here. I've noticed most of them are quite orange.

Anyway, I know it's not going to taste exactly the same, but let me know how it is. If you think it's good I might give it a try. :)

Those specks in eggnog tend to be nutmeg and/or vanilla seeds.

Well I have no idea how you're "supposed" to serve the advocaat but this is what we did:

First Alex poured a little in a bailey's glass.  But it's very thick, almost like custard.  Then we tried addding some milk and that helped make it more like Eggnog I'm used to.

My next experiment will be to put it in the blender with some milk and a dash of nutmeg.

Overall I'd say it's pretty tasty.

Made this today, it's really tasty and super easy to make (much easier than real egg nog). Gonna add it to my coffee later.

I just posted this recipe on the vanilla pudding thread. I will be trying it soon, I just realized I forgot rum extract from the shop.
NO EGG EGG NOG

INGREDIENTS:

1 pkg instant vanilla pudding
1 1/2 quarts milk
2 1/2 tsp rum extract
1/2 tsp nutmeg
PREPARATION:

Blend pudding mix and 2 cups of milk, following directions on pudding package. Chill for 5 minutes. Add the rum and nutmeg, then mix in the rest of the milk. Chill and serve.
