Okay, this is too bizarre. I'm visiting my niece and her family. She just had a baby and this will be my only chance to see them before I leave. So, whenever I come, I prepare dinner and a dessert that they wouldn't ordinarily fix for themselves. This time, I asked my niece's husband what he wanted. He said anything with shrimp. So I got out the River Road cookbook (a So. La. staple) and found Mushrrom and Shrimp casserole. I showed it to him and he said he liked all of the ingredients so go for it.
Layer bottom of casserole dish with canned sliced mushrooms (I used fresh and sauteed them in butter), then layer with....you guessed it....deviled eggs! Place raw shrimp on eggs then pour white sauce over the shrimp. Sprinkle with grated cheese, then bake.
We absolutely had to fix it because it was so weird! And, actually, it wasn't horrible. Each ingredient was really good. It was just that the different ingredients didn't mesh well together. Each bite of the casserole had a different, distinct taste. Not a total fiasco, just not one I'll repeat!
What we can't figure out is who came up with this recipe? I mean, how do you even think to put this particular combination of things together? Must have been a guy...you know, standing at the open fridge going, "Hmmm, yeah, leftover deviled eggs, mushrooms, shrimp....I'll just throw them in a dish and throw it in the oven....and, let's throw some leftover cheese sauce on top 'cause everything tastes better with a little cheese sauce on it!"
