Hi Thanks for the advice, It has already been identified in my appraisal by my team manager as something that I need to do, however, she really doesn't have any idea about international/home fee agreements.

I think I'll have to try and negotiate something about payments perhaps. I'll see what happens. The university who run the PQ aren't even really sure where things stand, apparently they don't have a lot of non-uk nationals applying for their PQs.

Good luck!  :)

Elena,

Thanks SOO much!  Good luck on your first day!  I cant wait to hear all about it.

How long it taken you to actually get over to the UK to start working?  Im just curious how long it takes to get all the paperwork and such taken care of.

Thanks!
Emil

I got the call from Reed on Dec 26, deadline for app was Jan 1st. Interview was.. maybe the 2nd week or 3rd week of January, got the position the following week.... Received my work permit on April 9th [ I already had my GSCC.. the other girls didnt but the time line was the roughly the same]. Got my Visa April 30th I think... was on the plane May 4th.. start my job May 11th.

Reed is VERY on top of it all so it all went smoothly and quicky. Even now that I'm here they are still my go-to person and have been extremely helpful. I lost all my relocation receipts and Fiona calmed me down and was able to figure it out for me. Absolutely a blessing.

It's fun reading your blog.  It is an eye-opener starting SW in a whole new country, isn't it?  I've been so surprised by how different things are here.  Best of luck in your transition.

Oh its definitely a whole new world. Wait till you see what i have to write about tonight. I remember US child welfare was the hazing of the social work profession, but at least it was structured and organized.

Is anybody doing social work in the Bath area?  Of the domestic violence type specifically?

Many thanks.  One of my fiances has become vulnerable and I've never referred in Bath, and have no experience with the local authority there.

I am in the process of working with Reed for a social work position in Essex.  I would like to hear from others regarding their experiences, both with work and personally.  I would be relocating with my husband and son (20 months).  My interview will be at the end of June.

Congrats on being selected for interview, littlecakes. :)  I'll be interviewing as well, though not till July.

You should check out Elena's blog (she posted the link in this thread a few comments up). She recently moved over to do social work for Croydon Council. She has an entry that highlights the differences she's noticed between US and UK social work. Also, there's an overabundance of info in this thread...if you have time to sift through the pages!

Hi everyone,  I just had quick question.  I am thinking of returning to UK next year or two (was in UK for few years then returned to USA), but I first want to finish MSW I started while back.  I am interested in working with vulnerable adults.  I don't need work visa so should be good to apply for those positions.  I was wondering if there is any particular field placement that would be particularly good and flexible for this type of work in England.  I have already done placements with juvenile justice and a hospital.  Thanks.

G- I think my interview will be July 2nd or 3rd. They will be in LA the last week on June/ First week of July.  I'm really freaking out about the whole thing. I don't think I'd be as concerned if it was just me, but I will be moving my family.  It sounds like an amazing opportunity but we will be giving up a lot too.  I'd really like to talk to people who have done this with a family.
