Stacey says Pocketbook and that cracks me up because that's what my Mom says.

The first time i heard Stacey say 'pocketbook', my first thought was 'Judge Judy says pocketbook!'
My second thought was, 'what's a pocketbook?' and i (wrongly) deduced it was a book that fits in your pocket, like a small diary or something.

I say 'bag' (never 'handbag') and 'purse'... but you knew I would.

Me too. I always said 'bag' in the US as well. A friend who worked at a posh shop in NYC told me one must never call them purses or pocketbooks!

(I have a friend whose mother calls them pocketpurses, to further complicate matters!)

yeah, i called it a bag in the US as well, but mainly because i never carried a US purse... I always had a rucksack /daypack or messenger bag.

Under Fashion - reading the last few posts made me think of this quote:

Really? So is that the "in" thing now in the US-to call purses bags? I've never heard that before-unless I just wasn't paying attention!
Come to think of it, I guess I've heard designer purses referred to as bags-but I thought that's when they were those big honkin' things.

I say handbag and purse but mainly because I got sick of dh not knowing what to hand me when I said "honey, could you pass me my purse please?"
