I think it is a *touch* neurotic.

I lived in a house for 18 years where there was a seperate toilet with no sink.  As far as I recall, none of the six of us who lived there ever came down with nasty diseases, though i am pretty sure my brother didn't wash his hands every time!!!

The house we live in is rather old. The bathroom is attached to the side of the kitchen.,obviously a build on. Its not too nice when Dales using the toilet while I'm cooking though!

Dales mates house has the seperate bathroom/sink-shower. I thought it was strange at first but when someones taking a shower when I have to go,its rather convienant :P

But that doesn't explain why you can't have a washbasin in the WC.  I know Americans who have a separate room with just a loo and a washbasin, but there is always a washbasin. (My MIL in England has this, as well.)

Here! Here! Why are there any WC's without a basin? If one can fit a toilet in a room, surely for a wee bit more money, one could fit a small basin.

I always feel a bit uncomfortable when I'm in the homes of people who I don't know very well, who have a "no sink in the toilet" arrangement. Especially if they offer me something to eat or drink.

I agree. I do not think this is one bit neurotic. It's called normal personal hygiene after a visit to the loo. If that is neurotic, then I am a straight jacket canidate because I wash my hands before I have a meal AND I have to wash my hands after shaking hands with people before I will eat.

The most important thing that you can do to keep from getting sick is to wash your hands.
By frequently washing your hands you wash away germs that you have picked up from other people, or from contaminated surfaces, or from animals and animal waste.

Matches!  Burn a match and blow it out,  it works great!  We were at a friend's house who had exactly the same arrangement.  DS went into the loo..  a badly timed visit, I'll just say; we were all in the kitchen cooking.  My friend gave DS the box of matches.  Worked like a charm to get rid of the smell!

How strange though, to have a bathroom attached to the kitchen!

I think I explained why this is the case a few posts ago...because lots of houses in the UK are quite old, many were built without inside toilets, so they just had to be tacked on anywhere. Very often the plumbing wasn't in place to have a sink in there too.

Yeah, I know the reasons, they make sense for here.  But for our North American sensibilities, it is strange!

I know about some houses being old and all that. It just seems that to put a toilet in requires a water pipe feed and a disposal route. A very small cold-water-only sink requires the same. The plumbing was being done from the start of the toilet being installed, so with a bit extra I would have thought it would have been easy enough. Maybe hygiene wasn't too well understood then.

Maybe they just couldn't see the point of installing a sink in the loo when there was a sink just a foot or two away in the bathroom.  BTW I don't know how common this is in the US, but in the apartment where my husband was living when I first met him, the loo was in the bathroom with the shower & bath but the sink was outside in the hall way.   So I don't think this is a purely British or non-US idea.

Those are totally two different things.  Washing your hands before a meal is good personal hygiene.  Feeling uncomfortable eating in someone's house based purely on the proximity of toilet to sink is in my opinion slightly neurotic.

Or the  space.  In the houses that I've been in with separate loos there is no extra space for a sink.  None.

No you're right, it's not just us lots. I have come across this in a lot of SE Asian homes as well.

Sorry if I misunderstood. I thought she felt uncomfortable because she couldn't wash her hands. If it was because of the proximately then I agree, slightly neurotic.

(I can just see my chat with mother later..and what have you done today dear son? not much just been shooting the sh*t about crappers, mom)  ::)
