I had hoped to have a happier Friday Five this week, but sometimes life just sucks.

1.  My work bestie retired last week.  Her last day was Wednesday, and on Thursday she went to the doctor for some test results, as she'd been having headaches and ear problems for the last year.  Yep, you guessed it.... the day after she retires, she finds out she has a brain tumour.  And if that's not bad enough, she has 2 tumours in her lungs as well.

2.  Ughh, someone has decided to put the radio on at work, to cheer people up...they've got it on Magic Radio.  I think you can guess how I feel about that.

3.  Had a MASSIVE sirloin steak last night, out of Morrisons.  I measured it, because I needed to know how long to cook it for... it was 4cm thick!  It came out beautiful... perfectly pink and juicy.  Had it with a salad & Ranch dressing.

4.  I actually have stuff to do at work today, so hopefully the day will pass quickly.

5.  Ian Prowse Friday night lockdown concert number 11 on Facebook tonight... highlight of my week!

Oh Albatross, I am so incredibly sorry to hear about your friend.  Best wishes to her!

1.) 24C tomorrow and 21C on Sunday and sunny!! Proper heat wave!!!   [smiley=bulb.gif]

2.) Doing IMechE professional review interviews today (Incorporate/Chartered Engineers).  Virtually, of course. Looking forward to it.  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

3.) Thick fog this morning, but now clearing away nicely. Garden is looking nice! Hubby pulled up pictures from when we moved in 5 years ago to a blank canvas to now and we've come so far. Labour of love!  [smiley=daisy.gif]  [smiley=daisy.gif]  [smiley=daisy.gif]

4.) Lockdown very very slightly eased in Scotland ,so plan to socially distance and see the in-laws after 10 weeks.  :)

5.) Solved a major work problem this week that has been a real head scratcher and supply problem for 8 weeks. Been really great team work from everyone virtually. Hard to solve problems at the best of times, but we've been able to pull it off across all of our houses ,the houses of a supplier in the UK and another supplier's factory in China.   [smiley=hat.gif]

My Friday Five:

1. Only 4 weeks left to go here on Ascension, and as much as I don't really want to have to go back to the UK yet (especially as I'm now going to have to quarantine for 14 days when I get home), I'm also getting really fed up of being here now... mainly because of the people here - the group has gotten really cliquey recently and I'm finding myself just not really wanting to be around them (mainly because I feel like an unwanted third wheel most of the time).

2. My other annoyance about being here at the moment is my new colleague. He's just completely hopeless at the job! I have worked with him before (we did half our shifts together in the Falklands for about 6 weeks), and he annoyed me then, but I had forgotten how frustrating he is to work with until he came here.

Bit of a rant coming up:
His forecasting skills are fine, it's just everything else he seems to be terrible at - there are various admin tasks to complete every day, like collating the data collected during the day, checking the products issued, counting how many products were issued, etc.... and every day I find more and more things he's done wrong. They are really simple things, the instructions for which are clearly written on the spreadsheets and in the job instructions, yet he still does them wrong. And I've told him how to do them several times, but he just doesn't seem to take anything in.
Last night, I had to correct all the admin tasks he did the night before, because he counted the wrong number of products, put incorrect data into a spreadsheet (even though all he had to do was copy the numbers from another sheet), entered the rainfall data in the wrong box, and didn't even do 2 of the mandatory weather observations he was required to do for the US flight - which is a flight safety issue (his product count says he did 9 during the day, but he only did 6!). I don't want to keep nagging him, but I'm not sure what to do when he's still not doing things correctly even after being told 3 times how to do them. Also, on Monday he went to do the weekly inspection of the car and he left the oil dipstick in the MT car bay! Someone from the MT department had to bring it back to me on Tuesday. I'm not even sure how he managed to leave it there, since you check the oil level, then put the dipstick straight back in without putting it down.

3. It's my birthday on Sunday, which will be cool, because we're having a mess BBQ down at the beach, but I'm not convinced it will be a particularly great day, given my numbers 1 and 2. Related to number 1, I'm not sure how comfortable I will be around everyone else there, and related to number 2, it's my colleague's responsibility to sort out a cake for me, which everyone else would then contribute money towards, which is what happened with the 2 other guys who had birthdays in the last couple of weeks (one of the other military guys told me to tell my colleague it was my birthday and that he needed to sort out a cake)... except that as of yesterday, the others didn't even know it was my birthday this weekend, which I can only take to mean that my colleague has not bothered to organise a cake or card for me. I don't mind not getting a cake (I don't like being centre of attention), but I'm just annoyed that he just can't be arsed to remember to do a simple thing for someone else.

4. Since I will be quarantining when I get home, I decided it was time to get a new exercise bike, and given that it's my birthday, and that I also have some vouchers from work (and a small refund on my car insurance), I thought I would splash out on a decent one. I've been trying to order one from Argos, but the stupid website won't process my card payment without sending a code to my mobile. The problem? I have no mobile service here and cannot physically receive a text... which means I can't pay for the exercise bike :( . I think I'm going to have to get one of my parents to use their card for it instead.

5. I really, really need to lose some weight. I came here with good intentions, and all was going well in the first couple of months - I lost 1 or 2 kg, but I've been lazy and tired from shifts recently and eating tons of snacks and I definitely feel like I've put on weight again (there are rolls I didn't have before :P). So, from today, I will attempt to go to the gym as often as I can, and try to eat healthier for my last 4 weeks. Fingers crossed.

Happy Birthday ksand!  I hope you are made to feel special by your colleagues, but know that we love you and will raise a glass to you Sunday!  Also happy to help sort the bike if needed (though I suspect your parents won't mind at all if you ask).

And I'm convinced that it's called COVID 19 as we are all expected to gain at least 19 pounds during lockdown.  At least I've certainly done my part!

1.  Work - things are still quite good this week.  Still in the running for 2 jobs which is pretty incredible considering the market at the moment.  Both have pros and cons.   Job 1, I anticipate I may get an offer today.  But I have decided that if I had a choice, I really want Job 2.  They are not moving as quick from the recruitment side as Job 1.  The second stage interview was different than what they had originally set out, so they weren't 100% sure what stage three was going to look like.  I hope I'm in the running still and that's what they are trying to sort (stage 3).  I may be really out of line hoping that I'll end up in a Sophie's Choice position, but of course this time next week there could be ZERO options.  I do NOT want to say no to Job 1 if I'm not going to get Job 2.  But who knows if I will even get an offer from Job 1.  UGH, all so stressful.  But a very positive type of stress right now.

2.  Kids - my daughter starts back at school on Wednesday.  Lots of children not going back but she really wants to and is excited.  Not going to lie, I'm looking forward to her having her brain challenged a bit more.  It'll only be a few weeks before they break for summer anyways.  My son was a bit behind in speech going into 2020.  Safe to say that's no longer a problem.  They are ALWAYS talking.  And they are just talking for the sake of talking.  I'm looking forward to a bit of respite!

3.  Lockdown - when Boris gave his speech a few weeks ago, it seemed as though we were going to come out of lockdown in a really slow drip, constantly checking things as we went and approach the return to "normal" with caution.  Well, that seems to have gone out the window and it seems we are turning the fire hose on.  I hope it works out.  I think most people will still act wtih caution.  But wow, they are pretty much allowing everything but hair salons and restaurants to reopen in the next two weeks.

4.  Holiday - hopefully this bodes well and my big birthday cruise scheduled for August 16th will still sail.  My parents are officially "out" due to the current climate.  But we will go if the opportunity presents itself.  I suspect the boat will be half full at best if it does sail, so I suspect social distancing to be pretty okay.  And yes, I realise this is likely a pipe dream but a GIRL CAN DREAM!

5.  My husband's birthday was a big success.  His final Zoom call of the night during the "pub crawl" through the house was with his mates from childhood.  The last time they had been together was 7 years ago.  There are 5 guys, 2 sets of 2 hadn't seen each other since that time 7 years ago.  As I got him connected, I went upstairs so they could catch up.  While climbing the stairs, I heard one of the guys  say "it only took a global pandemic to get us together."  Honey, it took a WOMAN to get you together.  Thankfully they saw how easy it is to click a link and have a catch up (they live in 3 different countries now) and plan to meet regularly.

Quite a novel.  Shows my level of boredom!  HA!   ;D

Happy sunny weekend everyone!

Happy birthday ksand & I hope you’re hanging in there okay Albatross.

  • So much sun! Supposed to get up to 25 in Moray today. 😎 I took a half day from work and am hoping to get to the nearby beach later on for the first time in months!
  • Friday night has become our takeaway night during lockdown. Looking forward to getting a Chinese delivered later!! 😋
  • Played a few games of Catan on Catan Universe with my 2 best friends last night while we FaceTimed. It was so fun and made up for the fact that we can’t actually see each other (almost)!
  • I left my yoga mat at my MIL’s house when I came back to Moray to work from home back in March...didn’t anticipate being up here so long so I’ve been using a thick towel instead which is just not cutting it!! The new mat I ordered arrived today & I can’t wait to use it - yoga has been a lifesaver for my mental health and for stretching out over the past few months.
  • No clue how it’s almost June already...need to think of something for my husband’s birthday!
