The stuff i bought was Welch's, but in a plastic bottle.
I cant imagine the container would affect the taste *that* much, so i've got to conclude that my taste buds have changed over the years, and i just dont like it anymore.

I can't imagine that much either, but I don't like jelly from plastic bottles but like it from glass jars. Maybe I'm just weird like that, but I do feel it's different...

It does have a funny smell too, not fruity at all, kind of like tea that has gone off.

Wow, that's a perfect description of what blackcurrant is like to me. I've never been able to put it into words, but now thanks to you I can. :P
I have to say though I'm not big on grape flavored stuff either. If I eat Skittles or candy like that (which is very rarely), I usually pick out the lemon, lime and cherry flavored ones for myself and give the rest away. I tend to stay away from fruit "flavored" stuff anyway because it has been known to give me the same reaction as aspertame. :-\\\\

Good observation.  ;D

I'm still trying to figure out why we are arguing over 2 different fruits. Just because they are both PURPLE, does not mean they will taste the same.  ;D ;D

Oh, don't even get me started on artificial cherry-flavoured things! BLEEEEECCCCH!!! They always taste like Robitussin to me!

How about peas vs gooseberries then?  ;)

One more note on the Welches... I find the jam is much better than the jelly, fwiw.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Oh god it does actually. [smiley=bleck.gif] I know this thanks to an old roomie who had a habit of leaving glasses and plates and stuff laying around the house and I picked up the wrong glass and took a big drink of some tea that had been sitting out for a few days and it was like drinking Satan's spit. >:( I thought I'd never get the taste of old rancid tea out of my mouth. Thank god it wasn't tea with milk in it. :-\\\\

My nana made wonderful Eccles cakes.  I just found out they're from here... but I haven't seen them anywhere.  Currants, booze and sugar... yum!

Old tea... blech.  Tea goes mouldy pretty fast!

I love Eccles cakes too ... but that's currants as opposed to blackcurrants .. different fruit.  You should be able to find Eccles cakes easy enough though, in a bakery or supermarket. Or you could have stab at making them, bit time consuming but it's worth it!

I grew up with grape-flavored stuff, and never liked it. I never much cared for fresh grapes, even, and now that I've developed a sensitivity to sulfites I never touch them. Bring on the blackcurrant! Yum!

OK, I obviously don't know the difference between currants and blackcurrants.  We grew red ones and black ones... the black ones went into the Eccles cakes, along with raisins.  Red ones were made into jelly.  For making wine, I buy dried black ones.  I've seen white ones, but not tasted them.  But now I wonder if I've got the names wrong...

The black kind that you usually buy dried and would use in things like Eccles cakes and mince pies are a kind of dried grape.  Redcurrants & blackcurrants are related to each other, they are berries & are a different species to the other kind of currants. But I'm sure a blackcurrant Eccles cakes would be fantastic!
