Who would have thought that a subject as basic as grilled cheese sandwiches would have generated so many replies (my own included)? Amazing, isn't it? I guess it just shows everyone's passion for them.  :)

I always assumed it was called "grilled" cheese because it probably originated in some diner where they cook on what they call a grill but is really just a big metal griddle. When I was a teenager I worked in the food section of an old fashioned pharmacy and we cooked them on the "grill".

That sounds like a good theory. Kind of like how hamburgers can be "grilled" on those things.

My mom used to literally broil them in the oven, but I've always taken the lazy way (frying pan).

Well, i've officially joined the grilled cheese sandwich fan club!  Had it on saturday with Tomato Soup (Heinz, couldn't find campbells!).  It was lush!

So, i've had Toasted sandwiches from the oven toaster and from one of those breville machines and i was expecting a similar taste, but it didn't taste anything like them...it was totally different!

DH couldn't explain the Grilled v's Fried thing either but it doesn't really matter...I Love Grilled Cheese Sandwiches!  (made better by the fact that i didn't have to make it!)

My husband always makes these and has them with tomato soup, I always thought it was a quirk of his but it looks like it's an established American tradition.   :P

I prefer to have them with Heinz Cream of Chicken soup.  I'm weird I know.

Thanks people!  I've been trying to perfect my grilled cheese all week, and I think I've got it now.  Yummy!  (Oh and making it with the mayo, big thumbs up!  Adds a bit of a zing)

Welcome to the grilled (fried?) cheese club Carol.  Happy to have you mix freely among us.  May you never burn half a sandwich by forgetting, and may your arteries clog slowly.   ;D

In the cafeteria of the Citibank call center in Sioux Falls they had deep fried grilled cheese sandwiches on offer  :P
I used to work for a company that did events for Citibank and for one tour we were posted to Sioux Falls so thats how I know. This was a few years back but there you go. Everything was deep fried there.
Can be done here in deep-fat fryers over here I guess  ::)
Good things come to those who wait...a really long time.
