What's the best whisky (whiskey)?

I know "best" is just one person's opinion, but I need some suggestions.  As  part of my hubby's birthday present (the big part, actually) I want to get him a really nice whisk(e)y since I know he loves it but hasn't bought himself any for ages.

I think he's got a couple favorites, but I don't remember what they were (maybe one was Irish and the other Scottish).  I was overwhelmed in the liquor store so I left and decided to post my question here first before buying. 

I don't want to ask him because he'll know right away what I'm jup to.

(I'm a little biased as it's Welsh, but it is really fabulous stuff!)

Glenmorangie is my favorite. I get a bottle of whisky for Christmas every year, and Gelnmorangie is easily the best I've had. Now I get a bottle of that every year, plus something new.

I have no idea how expensive it is, though. As it's a gift, I've tried not to look.

My Dh's favorite is Lagavulin.  Scottish of course. :)

I quite like McCallan.  Té Bheag nan Eilean is pretty nice too.

Talisker is the whiskey of choice by James Bond.   ;)

Personally I like Grant's if DH ever liked Seagram's Canadian Whiskey I've found Co-op's own to be a very similar taste (sweet & mellow in my opinion).   ;D

Actually, my all-time favourite is Johnnie Walker Blue. But at £150 a bottle, it's something I'd only treat myself to on very special occasions. It's like drinking liquid gold.

If you don't know what he likes best, how about a bunch of taster bottles?

I'm not a good source of info, my favorite is Famous Grouse.

oooh, I really liked the one you can only buy in the shop (or very expensively elsewhere). I kick myself for not buying it when I had a chance... although a great reason for going back!  ;)

I just bought a litre bottle of Gentleman Jack's from Jack Daniels. It is the first whiskey to come out of the there in over 100 yrs. I finally found it for sale here in the UK. Don't know what it taste like but from all the reviews it is suppose to be superb!

Will let you know.
