UK Coke vs. US Coke
« on: April 25, 2008, 11:08:21 PM »
The other day I bought a 6 pack of cans of Coca Cola from the shop. I noticed that they were US versions of Coke. It must have been a clear out and this company/shop got a good deal. I have always known the US version of Coca Cola is made with fructose corn syrup and here they use sugar. My boyfriend has always said he does not like US coke and I always shrugged it off as not that noticable of a difference. I have always said Pepsi and Coke are a big difference but not US and UK versions of Coke.

Well........I stand corrected. Even though I was just back in NY a few weeks back, I didn't drink much Coke but what I did have was not really that much different. That is, until tonight.

I got back and had a can of coke from here and a can that I bought that was the corn syrup version. OMG the difference was disgusting. AND, I know it wasn't this batch. It was the obvious difference in sweetness and taste. I can not believe how much I dislike US Coca Cola now.

Anyone else notice this? I don't ever want the syrup Coca Cola again

This is my big thing. I HATE the high-fructose corn syrup and can definitely taste it.

Funnily enough, grocery stores here on the east coast have been selling Coke that's kosher for Passover. It has a yellow top and guess what? No high-fructose crap in it! I had a perfect glass of coke last night.  :)

I haven't really notice a difference between UK and US Coke, but that's probably because I don't drink it that often - I'm mostly a Dr. Pepper girl (and also, the US university I'm studying at is sponsored by Pepsi and does not sell Coke products at all!). I definitely notice the difference between UK and US Pepsi, though - I find that US Pepsi tastes much more like chemicals than the UK version and I after several months of having to drink it last time I was here, I really can 't stand it anymore.

Funny, I won't drink UK coke as it taste too sweet. This is only when it comes in a can. Maybe it seems more flat??

I feel like the UK versions of all the sodas I've had taste flat to me.

I'm a Dr Pepper girl as well and down in Texas you can get (for a dear cost) what's referred to as "Dublin Dr Pepper" that's bottled in Dublin, TX and is made with sugar, not HFCS (also in actual glass bottles). I was SO excited that when I got UK DP, it tasted just like Dublin DP (though in a can). I could really taste the difference in both Coke and DP. When I came back to the US, it's like it's all just sickly sweet because of the HFCS. Didn't think about looking for Kosher Coke, though... good tip, sevans!

I mentioned kosher Coke a few weeks ago on another thread.  I bought it and didn't realize it was kosher until the cashier at the store pointed it out and said it was made with real sugar.  I went off Coke, and all sodas, about a month ago and seeing this thread made me cringe for a fix.   :(

Best Coke I've ever had was in Kenya.   It comes in the old fashioned glass bottles that get returned to the shop for a few shillings.  I don't know what they use to sweeten it but my guess would be real sugar.  It's one of the highlights of visiting the in-laws  ;D

I'm sorry to slightly hijack this thread cause I know this has nothing to do with sugar, but has anyone noticed that the diet soda in the U.K. tastes better than in the U.S. too? Well, Diet Coke specifically.

It's not a hijack as such Mort, ;) It still is about Coke. Actually, I noticed that too and with Coke Zero. I guess the formula is different here. In general, things in the US like sweets and sugar made drinks have this distinctive taste that is very chemical that I don't notice here. It's really odd

Not according to Coke.  They say the formula is the same all over the world, the only difference being local water conditions.

I don't like UK Coke as much myself.  I don't think it is the sugar/corn syrup issue because the taste I get from it isn't that it is too sweet, just off.

Formula might be the same but the syrup vs. sugar is definitely a difference. It's not an off taste just the difference that your taste buds need to get used to. It's like most things that we have all our lives then had to switch when we got here. Not everyone enjoys the sugar instead of the syrup. I used to be like that but now after 5 years I am definitely not drinking that poison again

There is a local soda compnay in my hometown that only uses sugar no corn syrup and I have drunk that all my life.

It is not the sweetness that is the problem.

They list the same ingredients (I grabbed a bottle and checked once) but there's no question they taste differently. Could the water used really make that much of a difference?

That is what the company claims.  I am not so sure myself.

I guess different minerals react to the components?
