Hmm.  Never heard that one.

I can't stand "you what?"  I think it's a northern or at least a Leeds area thing.  If someone doesn't quite hear what you've said, they say it.  Even if it doesn't make sense within the context of what was said.  I could have said, "Goodness the weather is gorgeous today!"  or "I can't wait until the weekend!"  or "I'd like to try these items on, please."   ::)

Definitely not a Northern thing! In fact, it's a bit more of a 'You wot!?'  ;D

At the end of the day! Doesn't anyone in the UK do anything at the beginning of the Day?

One that gets me is ending statements, with 'didn't I', which makes it sound like a question. One excample overheard by a man talking loudly on his phone telling about an altercation he was in, 'I only got thrown to the ground, didn't I.' Every time someone is speaking to me I have pause to wonder if he/she is making a statement or asking a question if it ends in 'didn't I/didn't it' etc, that makes it seem as if it is a question.

Another one I am waiting to die out (and it seems to be a long, slow death) is 'Oops, my bad'. When I was managing a Subway prior to moving here, I heard one of my staff say it to a customer instead of a proper apology once. It wasn't a huge mistake, she simply gave the customer the wrong size drink through the drive thru window, but even that deserves a more professional admission of a mistake. We had a bit of a talk after that.

With you on that one! Definitely not a favorite expression -- and sounds very flippant  :P

It seems as though EVERYONE in Somerset says "You all right?" meaning, "Hello, how are you?" At first it took me aback because I wondered what was wrong with me, haha! Whenever I hear it I still wonder if I look sick or something.

They say it in Lancashire too. At first I'd reply with something like 'I'm fine, why?', because I would think they could tell I was missing home or something and didn't look happy.  ;D I still haven't gotten used to say it when I am the first one to greet someone. I do my usual 'Hello' or 'How are you'. I figure they know I'm a foreigner by my accent so it is okay.

Husband lives and works in Taunton...I love Somerset but prefer Glastonbury or Bath. Taunton isn't too bad, there's some good shopping...but all the same I think it would be better if we had a car!

My BIL and SIL live in Taunton.  MIL and FIL live in Somerton, near Glastonbury.  DH and I live in Dorchester, just across the border in Dorset.  When you get here, maybe we can meet up for coffee sometime?  There aren't that many Americans in Somerset, at least that I know of :).

Isn't the Southwest fantastic though? I do love London and all it's hustle and bustle...but I feel more at home in a mid-size city I think, surrounded by all that green. And the weather is probably the best to be had! Do you like Dorset?

I was there for a couple years. I really liked it. We lived just outside Taunton in a village called Bishops Lydeard. My oldest was born there so one day I'll take him back so he can see it.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Oh, yes, I truly love it here.  The landscape is gorgeous, the weather's not bad (the past few months have been unbelievable), and I love being able to take a day trip to London.  Plus there's the south coast beaches, Bath, all the history of Wessex, Stonehenge, I could go on and on.

You know, I have a soft spot for Somerset since it's where DH is from, and actually where my ancestors came from as well, but there's just something about Dorset.  It is so beautiful.  DH and I like to go to Axminster to have dinner at River Cottage, and that drive through the hills is breathtaking.  My daily commute to Bournemouth isn't bad either, though West Dorset is the better half!  Really, I can't say enough good things.

Send me a PM any time!  BTW, there used to be an American who worked in the Starbucks on Taunton high street, but I'm not sure if she's still there.  It's been a while since I visited.  She was in her late teens though, and I'm a bit older than that, so we didn't really get much farther than the "So where are you from?" conversation.

Ohhhhh you work in Bournemouth! Went there once to the Russell-Cotes Museum...and to the fabulous aviary in the park. I really can't say anything about it besides the usual touristy things, but I did enjoy it. Haven't been to Dorset, though.

I will certainly send you a PM whenever I do manage to hopefully get this visa and make my way over! (I'm shooting for early August if all goes well). Not my first choice for times of year, but that's how it worked out....I am not looking fwd to another English winter with no car (and a child this time to boot!) At least it's not Scotland I suppose.

That's interesting, we are taking a holiday in Somerset next month, so that DW can do some family research.....her great, great grandfather was born in Somerset and worked on Hindon Farm (now an organic farm) before he emigrated to the US, she will be going to the records office in Taunton.
