My father in law has been admitted to hospital, he has COPD and is rapidly deteriorating. They think he may have blood on his lung.  :\\\'( He seems to be getting a little better so hopefully he will get to go home soon, though the reality of his condition is really setting in amongst all of us as we realise he is never really getting better.  [smiley=disappointed.gif]

Financial crisis in our household. Again.  [smiley=bigcry.gif] Just discovered we are entitled to no tax credits to help with childcare as we earn just over the threshold. We were counting on that, but they have lowered the threshold so now I have just discovered I have to quit my job, find a job working nights and weekends only, sell my car and pretty much live on beans on toast until DD is old enough to go to school. My parents are coming for Christmas and once again, we will be dirt poor while they are here. Last time, we both lost our jobs just before they came. The cost of childcare is astronomical and my in laws are too elderly to look after DD.

Oh Jewlz, what a terrible start to the week. I am so sorry that that daft cut off for tax credits has hit you so hard, and I am thinking of your family and your father in law.

I apologise if this is a stupid question (I don't have kids so know nothing of tax credits), but is it possible to maybe speak with your current employer about making a change to your working hours or duties so that you can take a pay cut to earn just under the threshold instead? Surely they'd prefer to keep you on than lose you altogether...

And hugs on both counts. You don't deserve either stress right now, let alone both at once. :(

You can't file fore unemployment on a spouse visa can you? (I don't apply for my ILR until Mid March next year.)

No, you cannot.

No, you cannot.

Not entirely true - there are two types of Jobseekers Allowance (JSA).  Contribution-based JSA is not considered a public benefit - as Amberelle11 was quite likely paying into it via her National Insurance contributions (payroll deductions), assuming her employer's payroll admin is/was all above board with NI contributions/deductions from her pay.  On the other hand, she is not entitled to Income-based JSA -- which is means-tested and a public benefit.

Ordinarily, a person (not subject to immigration control) would receive Contribution-based JSA up until the point that her contribution-funded benefit runs out, at which point the Income-based one commences (provided the means test is met).  Amberelle11 could not receive this latter one - however, correspondence would be sent to her by the DWP, when the first type of benefit is running out, etc.

Thanks, everyone. The childminder I was panning to use accepts childcare vouchers, so we are looking into that. I think you pay what you would normally pay for childcare but you aren't taxed for that part of your income. It won't help loads but it may help enough for me to keep my job, enough to make my job worth keeping. I only work there 3 days per week so I will still need to find something on the weekends to help out a bit more without paying childcare. Hopefully I will find something. Squirrelypoo, I don't think it would be worth it. My husband's salary is at the threshold, so it doesn't matter what I earn, really. We would both have to take a big cut for that to work and I don't think we would get enough back to make it worth it. :(

The scans came back and my FIL doesn't have blood in his lungs. His oxygen level is low but hopefully he will get to go home soon.

Jewlz, so sorry to hear about your father-in-law and your financial worries.  :(

My bad news is that my dad's taken a couple turns for the worse.  We're off to Florida Friday and I just hope he hangs in there til we can see him.

Sorry to hear your news, Andee. It's tough no matter where you are but the distance thing does complicate it all. (Hugs)
