What about a Mike Leight film or two? Secrets and Lies is very funny and  shows a real insight into the obsessions of middle England.

::)

I'm willing to give Becca's mom the benefit of the doubt and assume that she can differentiate truth from fiction, and thus won't be expecting life in Britain to be the same now as it was in Austen or Waugh's day, or that it will be the same in reality as it is presented in fiction.  Just as I'm assuming that she won't expect the police box in Leicester to be bigger on the inside.

As previously stated, I was making a joke.  I haven't said anything offensive. If you wish to take this further, please PM me.

Ooh, good suggestion - I loved Secrets and Lies.  Kind of sad but very good.

Agreed, but on the grim side....  Problem is thinking of a film that goes middle class. They're all either period films or gritty, criminal laden, heavy going.....where is one about Joe average on typical estate in typical town?  Doesn't seem to be many that aren't filmed in the big smoke....

What about books? I know the thread is about movies specifically, but I'm sure I could come up with a lot more book titles that would give the OP's mother a better picture of what everyday life in the UK is like.

I've got it .. not a movie but a soap that's on on any more ... Brookside! set in Liverpool, on an estate, characters range from working class to upper middle, various ethnic groups.

No need to roll your eyes...it was just a joke.  I really don't think Britwife was having a go at you. :)  However, I do agree that Becca's mom will be able to tell the difference between truth and fiction. :)

We can hope! :D

Chary, if I can find them in the US before we leave, sure! She loves to read.  I bought as a joke the Lonely Planet British phrasebook, but she told me she liked it because now she understands some of the slang she hears from Tim and on TV :D

For more middle class films, what about some of the stuff by Richard Curtis? Things like Four Weddings, About A Boy, Bridget Jones, Notting Hill and Love Actually (I know this one has already been mentioned) etc. Also, Bend It Like Beckham is in the middle class range too.

She's watched Bridget Jones and didn't like it, but I think that had more to do with the actress than anything.

I love Four Weddings and a Funeral, totally forgot about it - I bet I even have it in my DVD collection!

Never heard of it, what is it?

Shameless is a BAFTA award-winning Channel 4 drama show set on a rough Manchester council estate - it's pretty good, but is also gritty and graphic (http://www.channel4.com/programmes/shameless). Be warned: it contains lots of swearing, nakedness, sex, drinking and drug-taking :P!!

Yes but unfortunately the op's mother will be visiting in the present day, not in Jane Austen or Evelyn Waugh's time.  ;D

Very true but you do get a glimpse of the beautiful countryside.  I love watching period films set in the UK.  :)
