Philly cheesesteak
« on: December 05, 2009, 11:22:05 AM »
Anyone tried to make a comparable Philly Cheeseteak here in the UK ?

If so, what's the best rolls to get that come close to Amoroso’s ?

What sauce, cheese, meat is best to use ?

Going to try tonight - only have a Tescos near me :(

Any advise appreciated.

If you are looking for a dirty philly cheese steak then the steakums is going to be hard to match unless you can get a butcher to slice some steak summer thin. I made the mistake once of taking my hubby into trying a proper cheesesteak in Philly he was sick all day, the kind with cheese wiz and all.

The more former type shouldn't be too hard to make, some nice steak, mushroom, onions etc. I suggest baker section for rolls and the mildest cheese you can find. Recipe wise check on rachel rays website for the basics

I wonder if that was Freudian... I Googled "dirty cheesesteak"... then I wished that I hadn't. I guess from your line up of emoticons that you were already cognisant?

I'm guessing it means old school cheesesteak (with things like cheese whiz instead of real cheese).

It means something else, according to Urban Dictionary.

Oh my not sure what the urban dictionary says but when I said dirty I mean the cheap nasty cheesesteaks you get in Philly, they say that hotdog style cheap buns and cheese wiZ was the orginal recipe for a Philly cheese steak which my English hubby tried at a place called pats in south philly and then spent sometime after grumbling about his belly. I think that cheesesteak could of eaten it's way out it's own bag in less than a minute. When I used to crave cheesesteaks I cheat and get the steak sandwitch rdy meal from m&s and add cheap cheese to it.

I wouldn't call Pat's cheap and nasty.  When I think of cheap and nasty, I think of the street vendors.  Does your husband have a delicate stomach?  We took Tim to Pat's and he loved it so much every time we were in Philly we had to go out of our way to go there for a cheesesteak.

This is like the US equivalent of a doner kebab?

Pat's is my favorite cheesesteak place so I also don't think it's cheap or nasty, though perhaps cheesewhiz can be a bit much for someone who's never had it before, especially on an unfamiliar food.  I'm planning on taking DH to Pat's when we're in America in a few weeks, though maybe we'll order one with cheesewhiz and one with regular cheese so DH has an alternative just in case.  :P

Cn you explain what a doner kebab is?

A Philly cheesesteak is thinly sliced steak and cheese on a long roll. You'll get arguments that the cheese has to be cheez whiz and the bread has to be Amaroso's, but pretty much if you slap some steak and cheese on a roll, you've got a cheesesteak.  Optional add-ons are fried mushrooms, peppers, onions, marinara sauce, fresh tomatoes & lettuce - pretty much anything you put on a sandwich.  Native Philadelphians take their cheesesteaks very seriously, and there are certain places that are famous for being "the original" - currently, I think Pat's and Geno's are both claiming to be "the original", but pretty much anywhere in the Philadelphia region (and even further west to cover Lancaster) you can get a decent Cheesesteak, but the requirements will vary by region (in Lancaster it's American Cheese & Marinara sauce)

Tim liked the whiz so much he asked me to bring a jar along when I move....but I also introduced him to Cheeze whiz as a chip dip before we got cheesesteaks so he knew what he was getting into ;)
