[Girl]Gamers in the UK?
« on: February 04, 2010, 07:34:13 PM »
I know there aren't a lot of gamers on this forum (after all, this is NOT a gaming forum), but I have noticed a fair few. Here goes, I was wondering if anyone noticed if there were many other gamers in the UK? I was always surrounded by gamers all of degrees in the US (hardcore gamers to social gamers), and probably just because of my particular group of friends. Also has anyone noticed many gamer-girls? I remember when I was asking two fellow guys at university if I could join in on playing some console with them and they looked at me as though I were an alien  ???  ::)

Oh, gamers in the UK! Where are you?!  ;)

One of my absolute bug bears is the term "Girl Gamer". I could possibly rant about this for several days, but it would bore most people immensely, also that isn't a dig at you, it's just something that's been annoying me lately :)

Pretty much everyone I know is a gamer, but that's probably because I'm a games producer :s so that may not be a good judge of how many gamers there are in the UK :D
There's loads of industry people on this forum, and lots of gamers, of various degrees, we should put a rock band together :P :D

Although everyone is a social gamer now surely, I see Wii's everywhere (grr) even Camilla Parker Bowles was playing Wii Bowling the other day.

If you want to meet UK gamers, then Eurogamer has a good (albeit insane & hardcore) forum

Hiyah!  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]I love playing fighting video games/ beat 'em ups. DH bought Dead or Alive and Soul Calibur 4 just for me. He plays first person shooter games, racing games, that sort of thing. His current daily dosage is Fallout 3.  I don't play for hours on end like he does, though, but, I think that probably has a lot to do with the living situation more than anything. I don't mind being known as a "girl gamer" myself, but, then again, I'm not too fussy on titles either way. YAY!!!!!

We are a gaming household.  I tend to stick with RPGs (Dragonage, Mass Effect 2, Bioshock, LOVED Fallout 3, but not as much as the Bioware games), but I do get in on occasional Halo action.  I'm too crap at Modern Warfare to really want to play though.

Pretty much everyone in our social circle plays some sort of games!

I actually was hesitant to write on here due to the fact that i get odd looks when I say I play games. I normally play RPG mostly. I suck at FPS games if i play them I put them on easy because I hate to die every 2 minute. I go though bouts of playing WoW I used to play a lot when I had a lot of friends on there but 2 years on most of them have left. I live in a gaming house hold were my husband and I both have laptops full of games, a PS3, Xbox 360, and a Wii. I really enjoy Oblivion the most but i like playing Dragonage, Bio shock, Fable and a lot of games that you can get on the Play station Network. I am going to try Mass Effect 1 (I've been told by my husband its better RPG then FPS where ME2 is more FPS). I could go on forever but I won't :D.

Are you looking specifically for other video/computer gamers, or are you also into pen-and-paper RPGs, board games and/or card games?

Not me!  ;D  (but I'm old!)
The last 'computer game' I played was a Pac-Man machine in the arcade in the local bowling alley when I was about 19 or 20!

I guess I fancy myself a gamer--I started out on the NES way back when I was in kindergarten and I've played pretty steadily ever since. I have a tendency to lean more towards RPGs like Final Fantasy, but I also like games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Grand Theft Auto, etc.

But at the moment, my biggest gaming project is WoW, and I'm getting really excited for Cataclysm :P I'm just waiting for a release date before I pre-order it, and we'll have to get three copies since my husband and step-son play as well.

I am from the pacman generation too, and just to hijack for a second, can someone clarify something for me? When people talk about gaming, they usually mean computer games, right? Ones where you compete against other people? Or can it also mean board games, like Risk? Is gambling included? I am just curious. I know someone who told me she and her husband both "work in gaming" and I wasn't too sure what she meant by that.

I sort of take the term 'gamer' to be someone who plays a lot of console games.

I'm big on the RPGs. I'm currently replaying Dragon Age Origins (first time was so good, I had to play it again. Can't wait for the upcoming expansion pack!). And I have a tendancy to play for hours on end.

I tend to hog the xbox while Jon hogs the playstation 3.

I'm the only girl I know personally who plays games as much as I do.

Gaming is pretty much anything played on the computer or consoles.  I've heard people call tabletop game players "retrogamers", but probably some people would think that meant you were into older games.  If you played Risk on the computer, then yes, that's a gamer.  I don't know about the online poker and fruit machine people.  I wouldn't really call them gamers.  There might be some fuzzy areas where things like people who play computer solitaire may or may not be called "gamers" by different people.

I am a gamer.  I love almost every type of game except sports.  RPGs are probably my favourite genre (including MMRPGs and MUDs), but that is probably rivalled by my love of strategy games of all kinds.  I've been known to get sucked into FPS, so Oblivion and Fallout 3 are sort of naturally pretty far up my favourites list.  I will play things like flight sims or racing games, but I usually wouldn't choose that without someone else suggesting it.

I've known a few British women who were gamers, but these were mudders and playing MMORPGs like WoW or FFXI.  I am not sure what their representation is in non-Wii console gaming or other computer gaming.

I don't personally include board gamers in the term "gamer" (not to say that's wrong) and retro-gamer to me means pre-HD consoles games or game types. So you can retro game using emulators on the Wii or iPhone or whatever.  I actually call board games old-school games. Like "Let's play Old-School Risk!"

People that play those casino games, I'm not sure, I don't know anyone who does that, I'm sure they have their own scene.

I play pretty much everything and anything that's good, I'm not picky about genre and I have a 360/PS3 at work so I often play through my lunch hour or in any spare moments.

I got a 25 kill streak in COD:MW2 yesterday; Fallout 3, Wipeout HD, Drake's Uncharted 2, Little Big Planet, Bayonetta, Persona 4 (PS2) are all featuring heavily in my rotation at the moment, as is GOW1&2 HD re-release (in preparation for GOW3) and Forza 3

I have Gran Turismo 5 (delayed -AGAIN!), GOW3, Final Fantasy XIII and Heavy Rain (*faints*) all on pre-order (oooh good year for PS3!)

I've also been in the beta for Star Trek Online, it's okay. I don't think MMOs are for me.

I think I might be too old for such a label  ;)

We have a PS3 and I have played Oblivion IV: The Elder Scrolls, doing Mirror's Edge and when that's done, I'll do Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but my favourite is our karaoke, which isn't a game in a 'gamers' sense. I actually also like more old school stuff like tetris, q-bert and pac man. I maybe play an hour a week. The old school games like Risk sound interesting.

I feel old now!  ;D

We're a gaming household and my DH has been in the industry for over 16 years. We play mostly 360  ;) and we both have been playing WoW on and off for the past 5 years.

I am horrible at FPS and get motion sickness when I play them. I love Silent Hill (except the last one), Fable, any crappy hack and slash game, like Baldur's Gate, and my favorite game ever is Beyond Good and Evil.

I've loved playing games since Pong!  :)

Don't forget that social games include all the FB games, like Farmville.  ;)
