Well then that doesn't include me, I showered today!  :P  ;D

Me too!  Although, in my head I complained about the non-mixer taps in my department today.  Pretty sure that's a one way ticket out of here.  :o

Many of you have clearly not respected the topic and jumped on the left wing bandwagon, presuming that any mention of the word ‘immigration’ therefore has immediate race implications that suggest immediate deportation of an important aspect of British culture.

Truly pathetic to be honest, with many of you clearly not able to hold any sort of debate into the subject at all- and as immigrants!

Phew, me either.  I mean, I showered late in the day because I was cleaning, but ... better late than never, right?   ;D

And, gosh, I had no idea that complaints of any variety ARE NOT WELCOME.  UKBA needs to make sure that's in the paperwork that comes with the visa.   :P  Best not leave it until the Life in the UK test, because I'll have been here several years by then, surely moaning all the while.

IMO, there is nothing more satisfying than a hot shower after wicked cleaning.

Was there anything up for debate, aside from the obvious point of contention: just how many of us are currently occupying a stranger's PJ's?

Let me try to get this sort of back on track:

Although I disagree with the OP, I think it's an interesting subject nonetheless. Why do people believe as he/she does? Because, let's face it, we all know that a lot of people do feel that way.

What did you want to debate? I'm honestly curious...your original post did not seem to invite debate, in my very humble opinion.

I think most of us are just responding to the somewhat amusing (to us immigrants) demand that those who complain about certain - or any? - aspects of British culture should just "GO HOME"...as if people *in their homes* don't complain about their homes ever!

My father has always reminded me that one of the most important parts of life is to encourage, and participate in, the small rebellions.

I respect many topics, and love debate, but I am unlikely to indulge in the ridiculous. Unless duck covered PJs are included, obviously. (I would like to attest that my PJs are my own! You can tell because, well, they really should have been replaced a few months ago ;) )

I think that people often mistake the word "immigrant" to denote a particular race because it is often used as coded language in order to do just that. As many of us have experienced, people often have NO IDEA what the process is or what the requirements are. Also, the perception of the "stealing" immigrant who doesn't give back is one that is encouraged, I think, in some areas of the media, although statistics often show that high levels of migration can help make economies successful (especially where there is an aging population, like the UK.) In the end, most of it seems to be a combination of fear and ignorance, and a sense that if only "they" were gone "I" could have whatever I want.

Of course, I want new PJs. So, YMMV.

Fear of the unknown? Fear of someone willing to work hard and do whatever - for every immigrant group that's gone before- they were at the bottom at first, they started to earn a living so they didn't have to take whatever job going, so they started to look down upon those beneath them and so the cycle continues?  Fear of a loss of culture and identity, instead of a growing and changing culture? (I know I am one who mourns the loss of a culture, but I do realise things evolve and change and move forward, even if it is in the form of taco bells  :-\\\\) The whole "paying for someone else to scrounge off me" thing really ruffles peoples feathers (even if it is misunderstood that immigrants do actually work and pay taxes).  People don't like "benefit mongers" whether they're immmigrants or not because "its not fair".

...presuming that any mention of the word ‘immigration’ therefore has immediate race implications...

What?  Who said anything about race?  Or deportation?  You suggested that we should voluntarily leave if there's anything about the UK we don't like, but there's always going to be something you don't like about where you live, no matter whether that place is the country you were born in or a different one, so your suggestion is not exactly practical.  We were simply pointing that out in a jocular manner ;D

No one said a thing about race.  Did you read the thread?  It was about duck slippers and Ovaltine!  :)

And as far as respect is concerned, coming into a forum full of expats and declaring that if you don't like something then YOU'RE NOT WELCOME and GO HOME... well, it isn't exactly the picture of tact and respect now is it?

I will say as an American my family is immigrants...My Great-grandfather started it when he went to New York in 1924 and got a job in the USA and then called for the rest of his family.
So honestly when do you consider someone not an immigrant?

They were from Ireland and lots of people moved and settled back back in the day...So unless your entire line of family was born in the same country and never came from anywhere else in my opinion - everyone is some what an immigrant.
