Boiler issues at the rental.  PLEASE let the boiler man be able to fix them tomorrow.  Annoyingly, it was working BEFORE the annual service today...  grrrrrrrrrr.

I hope you have an electric shower... how will you bathe?!

* We don't have a boiler (or any form of heat other than two small electric space heaters), but we have an electric shower for bathing, and a kettle for hot water in the kitchen.  This is how we live.

We have a boiler but my husband has kept it turned off. I told him yesterday, "Where I come from hot water is not a luxury. I'm not going to live here and have hot water be a luxury". I won and he will no longer give me a hard time for turning the boiler on. (We have an electric shower)

At the house we rented before we bought and moved into our house-without-a-kitchen, we had an oil-fueled boiler.  We kept it off most of the time because the house was drafty.  I would turn on the water heater about 30 minutes before I wanted to shower, and turn it off just before I got in.  When the hot water ran out, it was time to get out of the shower.

We would turn the heating on for about an hour a day in the late afternoon/evening on cold days, so it would warm the house enough for us to make dinner and have some relaxing time before bed.  It would start to get chilly just in time for us to get into bed and get warm.

Every time I got through a day without turning on the heating, I was happy.  It was money we were saving toward buying this house.  Plus, it prepared me for living without heat, so this house and its many needs weren't such a shock.

I think ours is going out, fortunately not at our expense..but things always seem to break right after the service/inspection etc.

My husband gets like this with heating. He's a warm body anyways, but I've learned to compromise. I've also learned to wear thick socks and love my hot water bottle lol. I'm anxious to turn the heat on at our new place because it is definitely not as energy efficient as the old one.

We may end up buying space heaters and nixing the heat here all together. We have no gas line here so it's all electric and some of the radiator things are ancient. :(

I feel bad for this horse, but I know they still "own" it because periodically it moves to different grassy areas. My husband tried to report it to rspca(?) because some of the places they tie it up are close to a big round about by the parkway.. but they didn't seem to care.

We've driven by places where horses are tied up at roundabouts and stuff as well and it always feels VERY surreal!

UGH it's always the way, isn't it?! Annoyingly, we seem to have ours play up righhhttt about the time we're ready to start putting the heating on...

My, how time flies....

If anyone needs a tropical getaway, we live with FIL and he keeps his house a sauna! Year-round, he's in shorts and a t-shirt at home. No joke. It's so hot we had to close our bedroom door, turn off the heat, open the window and consider putting a draft excuder to keep the hot air out. When I'm downstairs cooking or baking, I am sweating if the heat is on.

Annoyingly, he only turns it on when he (or grand-FIL) is home so when no one is home it's ice cold in the dead of winter. Then someone gets home and cranks up the heating. If you didn't hear them arrive, you'd know it because the radiators would be burning hot.

I don't even want to know what his heating bills are.

Before we moved in, I'd adjust the heat based on when I would cook or bake. Double goodness of a toasty flat and fresh bread.

Just had lunch at my wife's son's place on Sunday. This topic came up. We keep our daytime temp in the house at 20.5C....occasionally I will "crank" it up to 21 during the winter. The sons wife after we told them this just looked at her husband and smiled and said "see!!"....this has been under discussion quite a bit I think. The son insists on 18C which I have no urge to deal with anymore.....I froze enough when I was younger. My thoughts on saving money on heating bills.....how much does one dinner out cost? That money will pay for a whole lot of heating so why not be comfortable all the time and not eat out? Being warm enough everyday is worth a lot more to me than going out to dinner once in a while. Our gas/electric and water come out to just over £80 a month.

It's a combi boiler so there is a hot water tank that's now switched on as a backup.  Fortunately.

The house has proper showers and no power showers!  My tenant has it so much better than me.   ;D

Haven't heard from boiler man or the tenant today.  If I don't hear in a couple of hours I'll have the husband chase.

I'd much rather be too cold than too hot any day. Even as a kid, I was always heat-sensitive. I find I sleep a bit better too if the window is cracked a little open, even when it's chilly out. I hate walking into boiling shops or public transport.

My husband is a little less arctic than me, so he puts up with a lot! Though I did used to work with someone who insisted on having the A/C on all the time. And I mean all the time. I don't think I'm that bad.

I follow the facebook page for the local police because sometimes they have notifications and announcements that are worth knowing about in town.  One of their albums is this collection of mugshots that they update when the person has been tried/found guilty and they give a brief description of what the crime was and how long they'll be imprisoned for.

Every single mugshot has comments from locals saying 'deport him' or similar.  EVERY SINGLE ONE.  Even the ones that are typical English names and the people look very local.  I'm not saying I know they are, but EVERY CRIMINAL IS NOT GOING TO BE AN IMMIGRANT UGHH.  It is so sobering to realize I'm surrounded by people who assume this kind of thing.  I know the US can be just as bad but if this kind of thing happens on my hometown's police force page, other people at least try to argue that it's not necessarily true.

I'll add that last week a complaint was made about my accent to one of my staff, the guy apparently said it's like I'm not even speaking English.  I have an excellent public speaking voice so I know it isn't true and it's just that I'm foreign.  So I know I'm a little sensitive to it at the moment but it's still ugly.

MPI, that’s completely out of order.  I hope whoever received the complaint told him to piss off.  Do you have a special accent other than American?

On NPR, they frequently get complaints about vocal fry, which is a vocal quality that's more common among young women.  NPR has come to the conclusion that complaining about vocal fry is really the same as complaining about having female presenters at all, so they send back a letter telling the person to go soak thier head.

Literally shocked...How'd you find out about this case?!
