Why why why do people think ghosting is acceptable in any way shape or form? Just suck it up and say you're not interested or that you've got too much on and can't do something....

I shook hands with a stonemason on a price to re-point a stretch of my boundary wall, he said he'd get to me in a couple of months... that was almost 3 years ago now!

If you don't want the job for whatever reason, just say so!

Jobs with a full time work load that are contracted for part time hours because of budget, but you are still expected to be a magician and get everything done. I'm not sure I'll ever adapt to life here. Even finding *a* job has pushed me further from being OK mentally and medically, because now I'm beating up my body from the drive to the office and the stress of the job. Spending today barely able to move because of nerve pain everywhere, seeing my GP tomorrow but there's not going to be anything they can do since they wouldn't even xray my swollen knee (that is still not any where near better either). I've asked for an OT assessment, but I am not holding my breath that I'll get it. :(

That's sh*t :( I totally get being overworked and underpaid with the stress that comes with that too. can you just do the typical British move of "clock says xyz. I finish at this time. Sorry you'll have to wait until tomorrow for anything else to be done."? Their budget isn't exactly your burden to carry.

Nope, cuz that deadline is written into their quarterly/annual work plan.

They should be paying you more for that then....is it in your contract to get overtime above/beyond standard work hours? If not, I'd highly recommend talking to CAB as that's definitely not okay.

It's expected you get your work done within the hours they assign, I'm working fewer hours today because of the extra I put in but it just means more work to cram into not enough time next week. It's never ending because that's how they set up the role, basically full time workload done in much less time for everyone on the team. It doesn't help that none of the work is interesting or challenging in the ways I enjoy, there is no problem solving or programming of any kind, its all office administrative tasks. It's only a year, but its going to be a very long year if my body even makes it that long.

I'd start keeping track of your hours/days to show what you're able to accomplish in the time allowed each day to show how unreasonable their requests are and speak to CAB once you have a few weeks documented if things don't change. Fingers crossed this is just an exceptionally busy period for your office.

It's a management issue, not a legal issue. Like pretty much everyone else in the same boat. But they don't live with a chronic health condition made worse by physical and emotional stress.

Totally second that. Few people really understand the enormous toll that chronic illness adds to life. I have multiple chronic autoimmune diseases. My employer has no concept of that at all despite my efforts to explain it to them. Good luck.

Guess it depends in what it says in your contract but, to me, it sounds like it is potentially a legal issue. But obviously you'll know better as you've read your contract and if you don't think it's crossed the line that's all that matters. Definitely appreciate that they don't get how much harder its hitting you with your health issues and that totally sucks. Hope things start to look up for you so you don't have to do a whole year of this.

Of course it is.  And of course it’s expected that you do all the work allocated when they flat out say they won’t allocate the money to pay for it. Sounds like a pretty good deal for them.

Just tell them no. Their work plan is their problem.  If they value sticking to it so much, they’ll pay for a full time worker.  Obviously they don’t.  So you shouldn’t either.

The problem is I am just not as fast as the lady who had been doing this for years. I can't be, I have to think through things because I'm still learning how they do everything and the administrative tasks that are apparently most of the job are literally my nightmare. But whatever has gone wrong in my back is very bad, I can't even lift a glass without pain, so something will have to give because I can't safely drive that far and sit at a desk all day atm.

Sorry to hear you are having trouble with your back as well.  I’m sure things will eventually get better with this job, and you’ll eventually find a better one.
