Is the UK that bad?
« on: June 27, 2011, 03:38:10 PM »
In the other forums I've been on everyone has been saying "Why would you want to move to the UK? It's awful here!" So, I'm wondering: Is the UK really that bad? I mean there has to be a reason people are living and moving there! I wouldn't suggest anyone move to the midwest in the US, but they still do it and they love it!

Personally a lot of it is attitude.  If you go into it embracing the adventure you get more out of it.

I think the UK is great, or at least my life here!

Attitude is part of it, but, from my personal experience, it depends on the area you're in. It also depends upon making close relationships with people in your own community. People that you know and trust and can confide in. That all helps to counteract the feelings of lonely-ness and feelings of longing for the States. For me, missing the States isn't about missing the entire country, it's about missing people that are really special to me, to my heart and soul, really.

It's a "grass is greener on the other side" syndrome. DW has had people ask why she should want to move from Philadelphia to Yorkshire. It's the scenario of when you go someplace on holiday and think you'd love to live there, the reality is different if you did live there though.

Like any place, you are going to get out of something what you put in, and it also does have to do with attitude, personality, and of course location! I have been here for 12 years and I love it here, my life here is fantastic! I have worked hard for everything I have, and I worked hard at building a network of amazing friends, who are like family to me.  I also love where I live, so that helps a great deal. Some people have great experiences, some people have bad ones. Its just like life!

I loved living in Glasgow; I don't really like my area I am in now. Just like moving to the mid-west, for some people it is a good fit.  But at least they don't have to pay all those visa fees.  ;)

I liked it a lot better pre-Tory....the election has made me question the voters/people. But then I read about the States....Michele Bachmann....Newt Gingrich....hell even Le Pen in France...

I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

For some of us, it's been just great - I love my life here (except for the weather most of the time, the last two days being an exception!).  Others haven't had the same experience.  I am not sure why, but I feel like I fit in more here than I ever did in the US.  YMMV!

I love the country.
Some days are hard, and some are easy.
Sometimes I feel very far from friends and family.
I can get sad, lonely, and frustrated, but it is not because of England.
As a country, I love England. I really do.
It is a great country.

Married 04/13/11, in NYC.
Applied for Spouse Visa the following week, with express service, and I was approved 4 days later!
Arrived in the UK 05/20/11.
I took the stupid LIUK Test Oct. 2012.
We were granted ILR In Person in Croydon on 04/23/13.
Got BRP 2 days later, in mail box - it just appeared.

Not sure what they're finding bad. I've had a brilliant life since moving here 3.5 years ago.  But YMMV!!!

Nothing could convince me to live anywhere else but the UK.

Depends where you are. South London wasn't my favorite (I'm not a very urban person). Out in the country, it's gorgeous.

I guess, now that I think about it, I've liked every place I've lived. Which is only right; I'd be stupid to live there otherwise.

Take what people say with a grain of salt. There's a lot of emotion attached when moving from one place to the next even within the same country. The grass is always greener of the other side, as TykeMan said. Same days are better than others. Enjoy the adventure.

I moved to Worthing, a small town, from NYC!!! People thought I had LOST MY MIND.
"BUT YOU LIVE IN THE GREATEST CITY IN THE WORLD..." was ALL I heard.

And it is true that NYC is a cool, exciting place to live - especially if you are NOT born and raised there... But, rather than being woken up by garbage trucks and homeless people, I hear seagulls and Sunday church bells.

Many of the changes are really nice, and London is not too far away.

I went to the dentist for a cleaning in NYC in December, and it was almost $200.
Here: It was 17 pounds.

I went to the TOP private universities in America with the top professors, and in my experience, I must tell you, that the schools here are way better, educationally, than they are in America.

There are many things about England that I prefer over America.

And, I moved here to be with my husband. That is a great reason to relocate anyplace!

I miss my friends. I miss PEOPLE, but I do NOT miss the country, or even the city of NY. But, I miss my friends A LOT.

Anyway, I have not been here long at all, so I will make some new friends eventually... They will never replace the lifelong friends I had in NYC, but they will be new friends, and that is an awesome gift.

You have to do what is right for you. What works well for someone else could be the death of you... Follow YOUR HEART.

Newt Gingrich and Michelle Bachman have not even been elected! Just like Sarah Palin...it's all a bunch of hooey until the vote happens. The winds of conservatism verses libralism constantly change. All in all, England will always be more liberal than the US, if history is any example. I mean New York Just passed the same sex marriage bill. It's all in fits and starts as time goes by.
