Jennie...
I am going to the "Wedding from Hell" on Sat... Well, actually, on Friday, Sat and Sunday! Can you believe?! A three day wedding?
Wanna go in my place, since i'm sure you have a nice dress... or several!!!
It is my hubby's friend Ben who is getting married, and he is OK, but his wife is just plain MEAN.
She told me, while we were applying for my visa, that "Immigrants are ruining England."
Nice, huh?!
And now, even tho we are broke (visa!) we are paying out 500 pounds to go.
She is wearing a Vera Wang dress... I am wearing a T.K Max dress... And cooking pasta for the 3rd time this week.
LOLOL!!!!

Lara, I found your thread about the wedding very interesting. I had no idea she hated immigrants, too. Nice lady.

What is still really confusing is that I believe that Jersey and Guernsey are English but not British?

Factoid: Jersey was actually occupied during WWII. Here is a bobby having a chat with a Nazi.

Guernsey was also occupied, as my mum-in-law is from there.  It was actually the first of the Channel Islands to surrender to the Germans.  Love to sit and listen to all her stories of the German occupation.

Along these lines, it's interesting seeing the formation of a national (UK-wide) football team for the Olympics. A lot of old feelings coming to the surface apparently.

In a nutshell, Great Britain and Northern Ireland, while one country, is allowed to field 4 teams in international competition, but not for the Olympics. Can they pull together?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/jun/23/british-olympic-football-minister-2012

It's not a matter of whether they can "pull together", there's a deeper issue at stake. There are many members of the international governing bodies of football, FIFA and UEFA, that would like the home nations to only ever compete as a UK or GB team, because as it stands we have a voting block of 4 votes between the nations whereas it would put us to 1 vote. And that is what many are worried about, we would be fine competing together in the Olympics but wish to remain seperate for the World Cup/Euro Championships

My husband says I can call ALL of the UK by the title of "England" - but he said for me not to tell anyone he said that, because he does not want to get his ass kicked.

I'm tattling on him, because he DID NOT PUT THE LOO PAPER ON THE ROLL HOLDER - AGAIN!!!!!

ATTACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The majority feeling in Scotland seems to be we don't want to compete as team GB in the Olympics, even if it didn't threaten the national team in other competitions. We're just not interested.

Well, technically, the UK doesn't allow gay marriage either.  There's a movement here to make marriage available to gay couples and civil partnerships available to straight ones.  Maybe one thing that the States seem to have going for them is the ones that are now legalising gay unions are going for marriage over something short of it.

Divorce is also different for civil partnerships. A straight couple can divorce in under 6 months if both parties agree, but for civil partnerships its about two years...

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I think it all depends on WHERE youre living and what youre used to has a big impression on how you feel.. I live just outside city centre (about a half hour walk for slow, dopey me) and think If I lived further out, would go NUTS. Im used to having things in my near vicinity. I dont drive (and miss it, but cant justify the cost of a car) so I need things to be local... On the other hand, Id never live in London or Greater London. Too big and waaay too many people.

I think Darren Fletcher would certainly challenge for a spot if he wanted to, and possibly also Scott Brown. But why would they want to mix with the likes of Lampard, Gerrard and all the other underachieving losers who only the English think are any good? :P *Brasilian 5-time World cup winning smugness*

But most of those (if any) wouldn't get into the Olympic team because it's basically an under-23 competition.

Isn't it true that everyone including the Pope has pledged that the formation of a Team GB would have no bearing on future international play? And if this is true why would there be so much resistance?

The current Fifa committee has written a non-legally binding letter stating it would not impact the home nations' independence. However, once the precedent is set, there is nothing to stop the next committee overturning that.
