American Pancakes
« on: December 07, 2011, 11:53:34 AM »
I just got back from a two week trip to Vegas and overloaded myself with my favorite breakfast of pancakes. I thought that would give me my fill until I go back to visit at one point next year, but nope.... I want them again! Does anyone know of any American style diners in or around the London area that sell pancakes? We had this amazing place called Buddy's Diner in Winchester that we used to go to that made similar to home pancakes, but it's two hours away now. Boooo!

The Diner in shoreditch does American pancakes, but might be one of those things that is just easier to make at home :)

I would make at home but I've never made from scratch. Does it still taste the same? And the maple syrup from the store is definitely not the same!

If you ate real maple syrup at home, and here, it should taste the same, it's all from maple trees after all...it may not be of the same quality and will be 10x more expensive though, but I get maple syrup from various places and it's normally really nice....very mapley.

If you ate "pancake" syrup, you're SOL unless you want to import it or buy it from an import store.

Making pancakes is pretty easy, if you can't be bothered to make them from scratch you can import/buy from import store Aunt Jemima's or bisquick or something.
I don't exactly know what you mean by "taste the same", taste the same as what? I've had numerous pancakes in the US and they've all been different, buckwheat, wholewheat, buttermilk etc.

Bisquick is generally in the shops these days.

We do the Jamie Oliver breakfast pancakes recipe (subbing banannas for the pears usually, add a dash vanilla) and they come out like I remember.

I've had them a couple of times, they're pretty good. :) Though I was disappointed that their "blueberry pancakes" are regular pancakes with blueberry compote on top, not pancakes with blueberries in them. (They were still tasty, just not what I expected to get.)

I know they have a location in Camden, and a few other places as well.

I've also seen plastic packages of pancake-looking things at Co-op. They're in with the breads, though, not frozen, so I'm not sure if they'd taste the same.

See my problem is the syrup, we always had the pancake syrup and I am not a fan of actual maple syrup  :P

We make ours from scratch here- after buying Bisquick for awhile I tried a few recipes on my own.  Now I use an older betty crocker cookbook with a buttermilk recipe- they work great for us.

Also if you want "fake" syrup get's some Lyle's golden syrup- maple flavored.  It's just as good as the fake stuff from home :)

On a side note- they made a version of pancake flavored popcorn on "Young Apprentice" the other night.  Anyone know what diner they visited in Leeds?

Thank you! Me neither! I love the 'butter' flavored syrup from Hungry Jacks! Yum!

Nope I love pancake syrup. Never knew there was a diff til I bought maple syrup from Waitrose and it doesn't tast the same. And what I mean by "the same" is, does it taste the same as pancakes from the box or restaurant style (which I can't tell a difference between).

Love banana pancakes. I will have to find that recipe. I do have Jamie's cookbook. It might be in there, I've just never noticed.

Thanks all for the suggestions!

VegasGirl,

I've been using this recipe for a long time.

This pancake batter can be made the night before, and it's very easy.

Also, Cybercandy used to stock Aunt Jemima in their local shops, and they have many London locations. It may be worth calling or emailing them to see if you can just waltz in and pick up a bottle. (A couple of years ago I used to pick up an occasional bottle at their Brighton location.)

IMO, home made pancakes taste loads better than anything from a diner or IHOP, Dennys, etc. So stinkingly easy its not funny! Id recommend getting a pancake pan (about £5 on eBay or even at Wilkonsens, etc)

Also, Tesco sells Lyles Goldens Maple Falvoured syrup, which is a very close version of pancake syrup. Its about £1.50 or so and will be found with baking products near the ice cream toppings

Also, if you have a stand mixer, you can make whipped butter with ease!

I make pancakes that are a Nigella Lawson recipe.  I made them for a company breakfast and they got rave reviews.

What's great about this recipe is that you make a big batch of the dry mix, then use it as needed with the wet (1 cup of mix just add 1 egg, 2 tbsp melted butter and 1 cup milk...mix and cook).  Here is the link for the dry mix: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/nigella-lawson/homemade-instant-pancake-mix-and-blueberry-syrup-recipe/index.html.
