It's the title piece of the (Oct.) magazine, but not the whole issue, so it's less than 50 pages long.  I'm not knowledgeable or well-read enough to comment on how good a piece of investigative journalism it is, but it's well written and was interesting to me (someone who wouldn't ordinarily buy a book on this topic).  It raised more questions in my mind than it answered.

This is an interesting thing I noted about it.  I've subscribed to Granta for ages and like to take it with me to read at swimming lessons, etc. and leave my current novel at home.  No other issue has raised the kinds of comments from others that this one has.

I'll have to try and find it!  Thanks :)

I am reading Ian McEwan's On Chesil Beach, and I want to like it - I really do.  I like some of his books.  But I'm starting to get aggravated with it.  For one, I don't find it believable and then second - grrrrrr - just get on with it, for god's sake!

I loved that one so much. I found it totally believable, and really tender and sweet and all understandable in a maddening way. LOVED. IT.

I knew you liked it & I hoped I would too, but it just isn't for me, this one.  I will finish it and see if my opinion changes.  Steve said he wasn't as fond of it as some of McEwan's longer novels, which he said he favours more.

I'm reading Happiness Sold Separately by Lolly Winston. She's great at humorous, yet depressing, books.

I read a book of hers that I can't recall the name.  Ahhh, Good Grief.  I'll look for this one at the tiny village library. Thanks for a new recommendation.

American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld.  I'm only a bit into it, but I'm really enjoying it.  Who knew Laura Bush could be interesting?

Didn't know she had a new book out. Will have to pick it up. I loved Prep, but didn't like her second novel very much. But I'll definitely give this one a try.

I didn't bother with her second after some of the reviews I read, but this is definitely on par with Prep.

Good to hear, I loved Prep as well.  :D

An update on what I've got right now from the library:

Infinite jest : a novel / David Foster Wallace

Thomas Hardy compilation

Jude the obscure / Thomas Hardy (already read this but didn't realise it until after I got it!)

The miniaturist / Kunal Basu

Love marriage : a novel / V.V. Ganeshananthan

The Mitfords : letters between six sisters / edited by Charlotte Mosley

I hope you like it!

Girl in a Blue Dress by Gaynor Arnold. It was longlisted for the Booker this year, but so far ... meh. Or perhaps the problem is that I fall asleep every night after about three pages.  :-\\\\

I persevered with this book, and I'm so glad I did! I loooooved it!

I've just finished a so-so biography of Enid Blyton and am now reading a fabulous book of short stories by Elizabeth Berridge.

I'm currently reading Nature Girl by Carl Hiassen. I think I might stay up late and finish it (can't seem to sleep lately anyway) and go to the library tomorrow to check out some more books.

The Almost Moon by Alice Sebold

Juries still out, but definitely prefer The Lovely Bones.
