I finished The Little Friend.  It didn't quite turn out like I thought it might, but that's ok - it kept my interest throughout.  DH thinks the 'Little Friend' was Hely.  I thought it was the idea of Harriet's brother's ghost being with her, as Tartt discussed fairly early on in the book.  I thought it was a good read.

Now I sure got tired of lugging that huge book around though (we have it in hard cover)!  So I now picked a lightweight paperback Under the Tuscan Sun I've had for awhile but not got around to reading.  It's ok so far, I like the idea of the book, but IMO the author thus far comes off a bit pretentiously - which isn't for me, but I'll stick with it.

I wondered about the little friend as well. I sort of wondered if the little friend refered to whoever killed the brother. And I thought we'd find out who killed the brother. Or did we? Can't remember now - no, I don't think we did. Like I said, I just didn't quite get the book. Glad you enjoyed it, Carolyn!

Today I bought:

Portrait In Sepia Isabel Allende
In the Place of Fallen Leaves Tim Pears, and
The Human Stain Philip Roth

Still trying to decide which to start first.

I'm just starting the Da Vinci Code

Step away from the book...  ;)
J/K, sorta, just not one of my faves.

Re: The Little Friend, I am avoiding reading the posts because of spoilers, but I will hopefully finish it soon and respond.

I just finished Tideland - the website for the movie is what got me interested in it - and, hmmm. It's well written, but on the weird/depressing side. I am not even sure I want to go see the movie now. It was also more like a reallllly long short story as opposed to a novel.

Next up is Brandenburg by Henry Porter.

I read Da Vinci Code a month or so ago.  Didn't think it was terrible or fantastic.  Just an ok read.

Can't wait to hear what pkessler thinks of The Little Friend!

On holiday, I read Shopaholic and Sister  ::) and some other sort of random book in the hotel we were at.  Oh and John Grissom - The Summons, maybe?

Hubby thought Da Vinci Code was silly.  Particularly because it got some basic, mundane facts about England completely wrong.

Chary: The Island was a nice read. I'm not sure how much discussion you'll get about it at book club as it's pretty straight forward. I would considered it more of a "beach read", but an interesting one nonetheless!

Interesting you should say that. I still haven't started it, but one of my book club friends has already finished, and described it exactly as you just did!
