Women wanting to drive out there is insane!  We were driving along (husband driving, of course) and we looked across to another lane and there was a boy of about 7 driving.  Seriously - the driving there makes Death Race 2000 look like a walk along the prom.

When I first went out there I would dress conservatively when I went off the compound - bowling shirt covering my obviously offensive bottom, sleeves down to my wrists, loose trousers and high neck.  When 9/11 happened I chose to wear the abaya, as did every other expat woman I knew.

Although they have been told that they don't have to wear an abaya I would be surprised if that many women went out without it.

The religious police can still turn nasty - there are posts on Youtube of women in Saudi being harassed by the religious police because they are wearing nail varnish etc.

But what a life we had there!  The compound was beautiful.  The Arabian Gulf (they call it Arabian not Persian) was stunning.  And we were privileged.  And we lived close enough to Bahrain so that we could nip over the bridge to civilisation (and Christmas) when we needed to.

Do you have photos?  I'd be curious to see it from a not-media site.

Difficult to photo things there.  It would be OK on the compound. My photos are mostly of people.  Email?

Actually, it has already created some interesting conversations.  LIKe:
How many sexual partners do you think the average person has in their life ? How long do most people date before actually having sex?  (These questions are rhetorical NCTami, you don't have to answer)  I was surprised that her answers totally were reasoanable (around 20 and third date)

I would rather give my daughter a lecture on tantric lovemaking than watch a whole episode of love island.
I just died. Lolol. I've not been following this thread but popped in to see what's up and I see this!

I miss parts of the lifestyle.

Even now I am careful what words I used to put in emails.  All the TV programmes were censored.  They managed to get all of Game of Thrones series condensed down to I think two series, and they put it on very late.

There were no cinemas and women couldn't drive.  But we were allowed to drive on the compound, and we did have a cinema there.  Talking of censorship - you would go to the cinema and the film would be assessed to be too long, or not up to standard, so they would chop a bit out.  Continuity wasn't a priority, so you would be totally confused because the plot had been juggled, put back together, and shown.

But the lifestyle was quite nice for an expat.

Similarities with the Handmaid's Tale:

Women didn't work except in what was deemed female areas - away from men.
Women can't drive
Have to ask permission from their husbands to travel.
Husband would be informed if you went out of the country
Until recently if a woman wanted to stay in a hotel on her own the local police had to be informed.
Women's main job was to have children
There were two separate social societies - men and women
There were public executions
There are separate entrances to restaurants and separate seating areas once inside.  A man could sit with a woman in the family section he was married to her or blood related.
You could be arrested if you were found with a man you were not related to.

Sorry - I am rambling.

I honestly still find it shocking that public executions take place.... The other stuff is crazy to me but not as surprising as public executions still taking place. just WOW.
My, how time flies....

After having a long watch last night, I'm starting to change my mind.  It's just booooring.  People sitting around talking about who likes who for long minutes at a time.  Not a single boobie bared or sausage flaunted.  They played truth or dare and a few people kissed each other.  Much like a party I attended in 5th grade!

I don't care if my daughter watches it now, maybe she'll get the idea that sex is as boring as that show.

Honestly!

And to put that in perspective, I'm happy to admit to Eastenders and Coronation Street!  ;)

That was soooo boring.  They were all too thick to acknowledge what the challenge was really about and give that watermelon a proper grinding so they just sort of bounced on it.  The producers should have invited Stormy Daniels.  She would have turned that watermelon to pulp and separated the seeds .
