Thanksgiving 2017
« on: October 23, 2017, 11:32:47 AM »
I know there's a thread going in Spouse House for Thanksgiving in general, but oh we need a menu/food thread.

My parents and one of my sisters are coming for a wee visit and will be here on Thanksgiving. We're going to be visiting Orkney in self catering, but we're still wanting to do a Thanksgiving. Will be a wee Thanksgiving, really, because who wants to cook a whole huge meal when you're on holiday?  But still will be easy enough to make all the flavours.

All fun cooking though, because my sister has coeliac and nut allergies and hubby can't have any dairy and only tiny amounts of soya.

Not entirely sure what to make yet, I do know I am gonna make a gluten free* pumpkin pie because I've got a tin of evaporated coconut milk saved up just for the occasion. And whipped coconut cream "whipped cream" holds up really well.  I can make both before we drive up to Orkney and can put it into our electric coolbox where it will be just fine.

*If sis wants it to be gluten free. She may want something different.

We will also be having a dairy, soya, gluten free Thanksgiving.  Our families know how to live it up, don't they?!?  At least alcohol (well, gf beer) is safe!

I love this time of year, but I certainly have a lot of appreciation for my family now that I am an adult trying to organize a dinner myself. I totally feel for you guys who have to worry about dietary requirements. With the introduction of a lot of GF ingredients lately, are you finding it any easier?

We're going for a traditional dinner and although there will only be 4 of us, my husband's aunt has not shut up about some dishes that I now feel I need to include, so we'll be having: turkey, stuffing, mash potatoes, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, and dinner rolls, along with a relish plate of pickles and cheese to pick on beforehand and of course, pumpkin pie for dessert. I've already started preparing, otherwise I think I would be too stressed out!

Dude, you’ve been here too long.  You put paper down before the pie....  I’m so disappointed in you.

As your punishment, please pass the pie!   ;D

Ordinarily I wouldn't have used baking paper, you are right it's bizarre.  However, the pastry sheet I bought had it and it would have been impossible to peel off

Oh good! I love to see what everyone's eating!  ;D
I have never held a Thanksgiving dinner, and the last one I attended was in 1990!
I always remember that year because I was at my parents on a visit and had heard on the news that Margaret Thatcher had resigned, which gave me one more thing to give thanks for.  [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

We do go food-daft for Christmas, though...

We always have Thanksgiving on Saturday. This year though, my husband's birthday also falls on Thanksgiving, so we decided to hold it on the actual day instead. Joint Thanksgiving and birthday, woot! We both have the day off. Two of our friends are coming too. Apparently he invited more people without me knowing, but luckily they can't make it. Our dining room table only fits 4 people- what was he thinking?  ::)

I still need to finalize the menu. I got the obvious ones like turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing... but haven't decided on vegetables or other sides. We'll do birthday cake and some other pumpkin dessert.

We're having it on the Sunday and both of us took the Monday off.  I work in theatre and we're hosting a couple of my coworkers for it, and Sunday is the only day we all have an evening free.  Then Monday my husband and I will have bubble and squeak.

I skip the shell completely and use either Glick's or Mishpacha Graham Cracker Pie Crust (whichever is available).  I pour the batter in and skip the first step in the baking instructions (where it says to blast I think at 400 for 15 minutes) I just start with the entire thing for 170 for 45 minutes.
