So now we are on BD 21 since receipt of documents email and BD 5 since this ‘not straightforward’ email. Having Received this email after paying for priority processing it feels like been ripped off! Especially when the common consensus seems to be its likely the application has not even been picked up yet. Surely there is some recourse for this. I understand paying for priority only puts you ahead of the queue with other priority apps but if they then just send out an email like this if they haven’t picked it up almost seems fraudulent to me.

It’s just an automated email - likely just sent out after X days from being logged in the system.

Also, priority has nothing to do with whether you get the non-straightforward email or not... you could have paid for priority but if you don’t meet the requirements or you have previous refusals or criminal convictions, it could potentially take several weeks or even months for a decision.

The average processing time for priority applications submitted over the last 6 months or so (before January) has been between about 20 and 35 business days... so you’re right on track  with the normal processing time at the moment.

The majority of applications are not picked up until the day the decision is made anyway... the only exceptions are usually when they have to request more documents or the case is complicated and they have to spent more time on it.

The typical timeline is essentially:
Day 1: application arrives and email sent
Days 2-29: application sits in line waiting to be picked up. Non-straightforward email may be automatically triggered after X days.
Day 30: application is picked up, a decision is made within 1-2 hours, visa is issued and decision made email is sent that day

Apologies I’m just venting...this is a completely frustrating process! But as you mentioned it...a simple ‘pot possession’ charge Listed from 25 years ago would they likely delve further on the strength of that?

They might take some time to look into it to make sure it won’t affect the application, but that’ll be all. If you provided the court documentation and police record, it shouldn’t slow it down too much as they won’t have to go digging for the information.

Having said that, a previous conviction can make an application non-straightforward, in which case the application will take as long as it takes. Priority only applies until the documents are put in the line - after that, you just have to wait.

Vent away!

Priority IS worth the upgrade.  If nothing else, your application will be assessed and started several weeks ahead of non-prority.  So it WILL reduce the wait.

It only takes an hour or two to process a straight forward application.  All the other weeks spent waiting, the application is literally just sitting there collecting dust.

As ksand said, once the application is picked up - all bets are off.  Which stinks but all we can do is moan about it.  :)

No we Didn’t have any records or documentation to submit unfortunately. In hindsight maybe we should have 😕. Not sure how easy that info is to find out for an ECO. Hell don’t even know if it’s for that reason! Could be that, could be the fact there is a 15yo dependants application in with it too, could be anything! As they don’t tell you what if anything is the hold up lol

The lack of transparency is mind boggling, isn't it?

We are both freaking out a bit and I think we go back and forth with who is the worst. Apparently today it's his turn. ;)
I didn't include any court documents or criminal records I didn't think it'd be needed as the case is 23 yrs old. I wouldn't even know how to get that info. I haven't lived in that state in 22 years. Slight correction, it was not a conviction, it was a no contest plea. I doubt it makes any difference in this case though.
Do you know how they look into these things? I haven't had so much as a speeding ticket since.
Thank you!

Don’t worry, this is all completely normal behaviour while waiting!

I don’t think they will even look into it. The important part it that you declare everything.
