I did the same at first!

My mom is doing some mask sewing in WNY, there is a company providing the cut materials so they just have to be put together for the hospitals. I never thought I'd see the day where the masks I've been wearing for years would suddenly be in high demand everywhere. I just wish I had one for my husband, his face is much bigger than mine. I'm hoping I won't be quite so ostracised in public after this is over!

The guy from work was positive for Coronavirus and is still in the hospital. Been in over a week now.  40, no health issues.

It’s believed he caught it at Cheltenham Races.

There was actually a 21yo girl at our local hospital in Frimley who passed away. :( The strains seem to have mutated a bit and some are affecting young people. I wonder if its because they felt invincible and therefore were exposed to more of it? My friends are still staying out of the hospital so far, but aren't out of the woods yet. Its scary that it seems to be in the second week of being sick that you either get better or end up worse. And the NHS ignored a bunch of rare diseases in coming up with their "vulnerable" lists, so many are going to continue to have no access to help. :( (since Sainsbury's has decided they will be using that to allow delivery I have tried to complete it, but I don't know if it'll be accepted.)

Sorry, I actually meant face shields.  There are several projects going , but none that are interested in anything that comes out of my son's filthy room.  At the very least, you would have to wear gloves and a surgical mask when handling the parts and we don't have either.
Funny thing happened on my Next door app: A GP has told me that she doesn't care what conditions the visor is made under, she's going to sanitise it anyway and she definitely wants some.  So, we are going to get started.  Maybe that stuff I ordered won't go to waste after all.

20 people being laid off at work with others being asked to take paycuts..... i work for a small company so nobody is safe... they are trying to say the cuts don't mean we aren't growing just that they need to be more choosey over where the money they have goes. I get it and it makes sense but it's scary because so many people are losing jobs it'll be hard to find another as i have no degrees/formal qualifications.

Just back from the shop. Went to get some milk and eggs.
Had to wait in line outside, which was ok.
Old man came staggering down the street, coughing like mad with no attempt to cover his mouth. He passed within 3 feet of us.
Red face, flushed - could have been fever, could have been alcohol. And that cough was juicy, so probably booze.
Unfortunately, the Daughter insisted on coming with me. Thankfully I had persuaded her to wear the one N94 mask we have. All I could do was pre-emptively pull my scarf up over my face and turn away from him.

Everything was wiped down when we got home. Clothes that could be washed went straight into the washer. Coats are hanging in the front loo and will remain there, with our shoes and purses, for several days.

As we were walking back through our neighborhood, several middle-aged, well-heeled couples were out walking. Came around a corner and a pair of them passed within a foot of us as if they owned the sidewalk, even though we dove to form single-file they did not. What assholes!

So, the Daughter has agreed that she will no longer go out.

On my usual morning walk on the river this morning (about 5 miles), I had a several people practically dive off the trails. As I walked by I said "boy, you guys are serious". The old man said something like "and why wouldn't you". I almost said something about there being a difference between 2m and 5+m.....but for once kept my mouth shut. Other people did what I consider sensible.....move to opposite sides of the trail, that keeps about 2m between people. I'll catch flack on this one probably....but if you think you need 5+m between everybody, why are you outside at all? If I catch the virus, it won't be from people out for a walk....it will be from people like my wife's father. He doesn't get this whole thing at all. Like mentioned on earlier posts......he just walks right up to you. He doesn't accept that there is ANYTHING different going on. He is one of those old guys who stops everybody and talks to them......goes to the shops most days.....never washes hands (or body/clothes....that would cost money).

Heading to my ILR meeting in the morning. No response from the Sopra folks, but the site is supposedly still open.
Fred

Yeah, ok, someone neurotypical explain this to me.

What on earth good does it do for people to be shouting out their windows and banging pots and pans to "thank the NHS"?? The NHS is working and does not hear them. Would it not be better to be donating money (or services) to the NHS employees, in thanks?

As far as I can tell it was a "let's feel good and pretend like we can do something even though there's dick-all we can actually do" thing? So the only people it makes a difference to are the people doing it, and it's for themselves that they've done it.  ???

People are all isolated and may be for some while yet.  This is a community thing.  Those working for the NHS will know they are appreciated.  Those out clapping and making noise will feel that they are not alone.  Community spirit.

Thenk yew.

That's never been my cuppa, but I understand that it is important for a lot of people. So, it's good, then, that they did it.

Are other things planned? (I was kinda caught by surprise on this one. But then, I don't think I'd have made noise since upstairs is pretty sick and the last thing they need is a lot of noise right now.)

Keep in mind the NHS put out an appeal for 20,000 volunteers. 405,000 people signed up in under 24 hours.

People want to show their appreciation to the NHS, this was something we could do as a nation.  I am sure the thousands of NHS staff appreciate the gesture.  I know, for me, I don’t need to be rewarded financially at work, I just need to know I’m valued.
