Thenk yew.

That's never been my cuppa, but I understand that it is important for a lot of people. So, it's good, then, that they did it.

Are other things planned? (I was kinda caught by surprise on this one. But then, I don't think I'd have made noise since upstairs is pretty sick and the last thing they need is a lot of noise right now.)
While it's not my cup of tea either i can appreciate that it might do a lot to make people feel bonded, boost morale at a time where people feel helpless as they are stuck in their homes for the better part of their week, and may be one tiny thing people csn do to make nhs workers feel more appreciated while also having it done from their own homes. As KF said, yes there have been other things being done (like offers for volunteers), but this was just something small with noise lasting only 1 measly minute that might have made a much bigger impact on some people's mental health. If will hardly be more of a disruption than when a helecipter flies over or ambulance sirens drive past or noisey people walk past your window heading home for the pub. It might seem insignificant to some peoppe, but the NHS workers I know personally (my SIL being one of them) were really appreciative of the smell gesture.

To each their own though.

KoD, I'm not criticizing anyone for it. (And it went on a lot longer than 1 minute here!). If it makes them feel better, great. Fine! Whatever it takes to keep them going. And if it makes people in the NHS feel better, that's gravy.  It seems rather odd to me, but it doesn't have to make sense to me to be "real" to others.

As for the noise, again, I wouldn't have done it even had I known in advance it was happening because my neighbor is ill with a splitting headache and ~any~ noise would have been inconsiderate of me to make.  Especially if it was being done for primarily my benefit.

My question still stands, though. Are they planning anything else?

Not suggesting you were criticising, just answering your question regarding why people would do it. Are you asking specifically if they are planning more clapping? If so, not that I'm aware of (anybody else seen anything saying any other dates?). Just a one-off i believe.

Not surprised it was planned here given Italy and Spain did similar so it was a matter of time i think, but not seen anything suggesting it would be happening again any time soon.

We have seen a lot of rainbows in windows around though and that has been quite nice.

So rainbows are "a thing" too, then?

Anything else like that that might cheer people up? (God, the grammar police are going to come haul me away....)

There was a thing we used to do when I was very young.  We would put a candle light in the window at night during hard times, so that people would see it and remember there is light in even the darkest places/times. But that was a long time ago and probably wouldn't mean anything here.

Yep. It's giving kids something to focus on making and giving them a bit if hope as their lives are very abnormal right now and they don't fully understand why or the gravity of the situation. It was also making a lot of people feel connected and smile (at least in my area).

And it's the least disruptive to others ;)

Can't think of any other things that you've been missing out on. Anybody else think of anything?

What do you mean by this? (Genuine question) Do you mean Brits wouldn't get it or the overall context of it wouldn't be understood in current times?

People share "burning candles" but it's more digital now on social media, etc. (So not something you would likely have been aware of but it is being done, just not in this context). They do it more of a sign of solidarity of loss from what I've seen when I've seen it.

Here is actually a bit of history about the candle in the window for anybody who might be interested (seems to have actually originated over here - bit dark though for a "positives thread" just FYI! ) : https://wasatchshutter.com/the-history-of-the-candle-in-the-window/

Weidrly enough seems to be a "Christmas candle" lol (fun fact)

Just off the back of the impact the clapping did, just coincidentally seen this posted on my village FB page. Nice to read that the NHS staff genuinely heard the message and know they are appreciated even when they feel they aren't or feel helpless :)

Haha that is cool. How does that work? I genuinely do feel for the kids who are bored and want to go out to play at the park or with friends or go to their dance/whatever classes and just don't understand why it's so important they don't. They know we're fighting this invisible thing but because it's invisible they don't all realise just how dangerous it is. And bless all the parents having to balance work/life and schooling your kids. You all have my praise! Lol

I think each community is doing something different. Usually being shared in community groups and WhatsApp groups, NextDoor, etc.

Both.

Yeah, so it probably won't translate. I've seen it used on memorial websites (I do a lot of genealogy, and that involves looking through obits, etc., at times.).

Interesting article. I saw it practiced in two wildly different cultures. One was my original Irish Catholic (as in off-the-boat-from-the-wilds-of-the-west of Ireland Irish) neighborhood on the East Coast and the other was in a very rural area in far West Texas. You could see a light for miles and miles out there, and you could see the lights in ranch houses and knew someone was there and tending it. And if lost, you could follow that light in for a meal and a bed. Not many Irish out there, but there may have been at some point. Or it could have spontaneously started there as a custom on it's own.

Some people are putting up their Christmas tree in the window and putting the Christmas lights on.

Light, in whatever form, tends to uplift.

I may have been mistaken.
Googled to see what was out there about candles in windows and came up with this one.  :)

Oh yes! Few people in my village have done it too! It's effecticely the same sentiment of the candle in the window but more modern take.
