I thought the Queen was awesome - Even many of the Scots thought so too

As you would probably expect from me, I despise the Royals and didn't watch Betty's speech.
I've seen online, and heard on TV though, that one of the trite, glib, vacuous phrases she trotted out was something like "We will be with our friends again, we will be with our families again, we will meet again,".

Aye.  Except for the ones who are DEAD.  >:( >:( >:(

It's ok Albatross, we still love you!   :)

There is nothing like a bit of wartime spirit to boost the mood of the nation.  :)

I guess if she said, 'Lets get herd immunity, and there will be a lot of death and destruction and huge loss of life'  that wouldn't have gone down too well either ;)  :D

Yeah, well, like I said, she's a sweet old lady.  I admire her wartime work, from 80 years ago. And she may write 'em, but that doesn't make them literary gems. Yes, her heart is in the right place.  But it was kind of like getting a Hallmark Card. Lots of platitudes. Nothing of substance. Nothing to even inspire. And then the BBC (or whichever station it was) reading into every line she spoke whatever the meaning they wished to ascribe to it.  It's kind of predictable, really, I guess.  You know, "the Queen wore a blue suit. That means....xyz." "The Queen didn't go to this/or/other place. That means....xyz." To the point of trivialization of everything she does.

Didn't do a darned thing for me, but she's not my grandma. Maybe if she had been it would have meant more? So it was meant to boost morale, then?

The BBC are trying to keep the country informed without instilling panic.

The Queen is deployed to boost morale.

So, they fudge the truth to keep panic down. I think I'd prefer the truth, but judging how people here react in a crisis, they may be onto something.  ;)

So, I assume that for someone, somewhere, it works then? Maybe you just have to have been born Brit and have grown up in the English social structure.

"We will be with our friends again, we will be with our families again, we will meet again".  Yeah, like in the hereafter.   ;)  WWII ended 75 years ago. This isn't WWII. This is much, much worse.

I thought it was interesting that on the news last night they allowed the BBC to film inside an ICU and explained what happens there.  It was essentially bright lights, tons of machines  and about 20 doctors and nurses running around doing stuff constantly around unconscious patients.  It seems ridiculous to me that Boris is essentially just fine but was moved in there just in case like the government says.  If you were conscious, at the very least you couldn't sleep and it would be loud and terrifying.

A 70 year old man asked to be interviewed during that news item. Lying face down he removed his forced oxygen mask to be interviewed.

Five 12-hour shifts a week in those conditions is absolutely amazing.

I thought the Queen's speech was excellent and I fully understand why some/many Americans don't get the point, but please stop droning on about why you don't get it.

To be fair, we don't know that they are fudging, it could very well be the truth.

There are a lot of elderly people in the UK, that speech will have meant a lot to them and from the comments here, also to some of the younger population too.  :)

I can place an order now?  You have to be in the local postcodes but you live closer than me.  Maybe they temporarily suspended them but they are definitely delivering.

This isn't WWII. This is much, much worse.

Roughly 75 million people died in World War II, from war, genocide, disease, and starvation. People were forced from their homes permanently. Soldiers were deployed for years.

According to the WHO, 67,000 people have died from coronavirus as of yesterday. We've all been stuck at home for less than a month. This is not worse.

Exactly.  We are not cowering in air raid shelters like our parents and grandparents did. We have power, running water, mass communication and plenty of food.

The government has asked me to sit in pj’s all day, on my sofa, petting my cat, watching trash tv.  This is NOT a hardship like war.   ;D

And my biggest “problem” are my two kiddos interrupting the trash tv.   Yeah, I’ll take this over WWII.
