Roughly 75 million people died in World War II, from war, genocide, disease, and starvation. People were forced from their homes permanently. Soldiers were deployed for years.

According to the WHO, 67,000 people have died from coronavirus as of yesterday. We've all been stuck at home for less than a month. This is not worse.

I still have food (even if it's not as convenient or with options - no room to be picky necessarily) and have not heard reports of people actually starving yet (massively frustrated with stores or scared they may have trouble, but nobody yet who has properly been unable to eat), a roof over my head, heat functioning, running water, and the internet to be able to keep connected to loved ones as well as to keep entertained through various methods. While i respect a person's right to feel how they feel, i can honestly just say that - for me - this is not at all like living through a war or even as bad as living in a 2nd or 3rd world country (or living rough or in a less fortunate area of a 1st world country). I know it seems bleak and mental health issues are kicking in for SO many (maybe the positive is that this will draw attention to helping with mental illness more now?), but it seems a bit extreme to compare it to living through WWII...though your feelings are valid if that is how you feel.

The government has asked me to sit in pj’s all day, on my sofa, petting my cat, watching trash tv.  This is NOT a hardship like war.   ;D

And my biggest “problem” are my two kiddos interrupting the trash tv.   Yeah, I’ll take this over WWII.

I'm being furloughed next week (finally!!) -- just in time for Virgin Media to make many of the channels available that I don't normally get on the basic package.... cant wait to watch 90 Day Fiancee, as all my pals at work talk about it, and I've been left out... until now!   ;) ;)

Boris into ICU. Not good  :-\\\\

Latest reports from Sky news, he's still on O2 but not requiring ventilation. No pneumonia. So good news so far.

I thought the Queen's speech was excellent and I fully understand why some/many Americans don't get the point, but please stop droning on about why you don't get it.

Sorry you don't like the conversation, Durhamlad. You do have the capacity to scroll down, I believe.

But I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me why that was expected to work. Otherwise, it seems very much like one of those "we do it because we've always done it" - like having a set meal at Christmas is supposed to make everyone happy. So they pretend to be happy, even if they are not, because that's the way it's always done.

Edit: Have seen the subsequent post about old people, etc., it mattering to. Hope it did.

When this rips through the third world, it will be just ghastly. I would assume much worse, in all likelihood. They are already leaving dead bodies out in the streets in some places, because there's nothing else to do with them.  Look past the UK/USA.  And ventilators, and anti-viral drugs. This is going to kill so many people, and starvation will follow, and disease will follow that. And when it comes back around for subsequent waves....?

Yeah, it's worse than WWII.   :(

As noted in my post above, this is a hell of a lot bigger than the UK (or the USA). India is turning trains into hospitals. It won't be enough.

My life is almost no different than it was prior to lockdown, with the primary difference being I cannot go out to a restaurant twice a week as I did before, nor look through the shops. It's not about me. Or you, specifically.

It is amazing how quickly things have changed.  How quickly we have all had to adapt.  Suddenly trashy daytime TV is part of our routine.  Going out to clap on a Thursday night is the highlight of the week because you get to shout to other human beings across the road. There is a feeling of achievement when you manage to get a delivery slot in a supermarket.  Another achievement is finding toilet rolls in the shops.  We are trying to go for our permitted walk at dawn and are enjoying the birds and the spring flowers.  We are getting deliveries from local business and so are enjoying fresh veg from a local farm. We've registered with a milkman and Saturday's excitement will be our first delivery from them.  We  have found a local butcher who delivers and so plan on a bacon butty for breakfast tomorrow.

The sense of community as we waved to people we didn't know and shouted an hello, from a safe distance of course.   Realising  we were watching history when the Queen addressed the nation and being grateful for her service and her words.

Life's focus has certainly changed.

Has it really only been a few weeks?

28 Feb 2020, first case reported in the UK.
16 March 2020, first advisories to shield/shelter in place issued
So, yes, it's been five-ish weeks now.
Five very long weeks of being fed conflicting information, disinformation, misinformation, and guesses.

We still have no real clue how many people are infected, since the only testing going on is at the hospitals in the UK and that's the only way to know who is infected. We are not even sure of the actual death rate. https://edition.cnn.com/2020/04/07/uk/coronavirus-uk-deaths-intl-gbr/index.html   In the USA they have no idea, either. I heard one interview with a scientist who was saying it was not out of line to multiply any numbers of infected persons published by a factor of 100 to account for the silent cases. Deaths from Covid are only reported if there have been tests proving infection, in the USA. Coroners cannot easily get test kits, so those deaths are not considered in the stats. So heaven only knows how many people this has killed already.

Thankfully they ~do~ have an antibody test, and are just waiting for FDA approval to mass produce it. That would let people know, at least, if they've already had it. Won't do much for anyone who has not, other than confirming that status.  Where the world goes from there, who knows?

Given that, the sanest thing to do is walk at sunrise and listen to the birds.

You'll note I am not my usual "springtime and flowers" upbeat self.

Give this a read. I am loathe to say it, but it's pretty spot on.
https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/03/how-will-coronavirus-end/608719/

If the pollsters are correct, Trump's overall approval rating is still strong. Which means, especially if the Bernie Bros don't check their egos at the door and throw in behind Joe Biden, that we'll have Trump for another four years and this insanity will go on forever.

I'm watching my country implode. It doesn't make for a cheery disposition.  I'll be back in a few days if there's anything worth saying, or when the mental laxatives work, whichever comes first.
