Me, too - this is unheard of! I received the money today and it was such a surprise - I didn't think there was any chance we'd get it as overseas Americans (since filing U.S. taxes but claiming UK tax credits = $0 due every year). I'm especially confused that I've also received the $500 for my child, when I've never previously been eligible to receive anything for him, even though I file as Head of Household (my husband is NRA). I'm thrilled to have this extra money - it's a big help during this uncertain time, but what a shock they considered us for once...someone must have remembered it's an election year.
If you have earned income you would already be receiving a refund of $1,400 per year per child.

I was scrolling through this topic and noted that you are filing as "head of household". While it's none of my business, are you sure that you qualify to file under that status, rather than MFS, but claiming your child as a dependent?

This webpage has the criteria in everyday terms, rather than the typical bureaucratic gibberish: https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/family/guide-to-filing-taxes-as-head-of-household/L4Nx6DYu9

Hi vadio, yes, I am eligible to file as Head of Household - I'm the higher earner in my household and my husband is a (British) NRA. We don't intend to ever move to the USA, at this point, and as far as I can see there is no advantage to filing jointly - for us.

Here is the information I based this decision on:  https://www.irs.gov/individuals/international-taxpayers/us-citizens-and-resident-aliens-abroad-head-of-household

I have heard that this should be possible, but I've never been able to figure out how to get refund money for the Child Tax Credit from the IRS. When I follow the guidance in Publication 972, it adds the money on, and then makes me erase it again later in the same 'Child Tax Credit and Credit for Other Dependents' worksheet. I don't understand how others are able to claim this successfully when they live abroad. I must be doing it wrong, somehow, but I can't figure it out.

I use a different bank, but in my experience it usually takes 7+ days to appear, for foreign payments/checks.

It appeared in my account after 2 yesterday. So it only took 3 full business days for me

Excellent news. It is not taxable by the UK: https://americanexpatfinance.com/tax/item/459-u-s-cares-act-stimulus-payments-not-taxable-as-income-in-uk

Great news. I’ll tell my son he can stop worrying about the black helicopters descending on him.

I have officially given up any hope of receiving my stimulus check. It's going on 6 weeks now and I received the letter a little over 2 and a half weeks ago. On top of that I have gotten 5 pieces of mail from the US in the past 6 weeks and most came in about 8 days with the latest taking 10 days. And I saw on the letter that they listed the wrong post code for my address.I have tried calling but can never reach anyone.
Looking at the updated FAQ, anyone with a foreign address has to wait 9 weeks before they will help you. then you have to call the number I have been calling but never able to reach anyone and there is no waiting system. If I am ever able to reach anyone, I would need to initiate a trace on my check which can take 6 weeks, then maybe I will be able to have a check reissued which will probably take an additional 6 to 8 weeks. That is all assuming everything goes well and no one has somehow cashed my check, in which case I have to file a report with the FBI.
If the check is sent back to them, then it would be listed as such on the get my payment site. The fact that it hasn't tells me that it was either mailed to the wrong address and the person may have just tossed it or was lost somewhere along the one of being delivered to me.

If it was returned to them, mail going the opposite direction is *very* slow right now. Taking well over a month!

Update: Going on 2 weeks of receiving my letter to say I would be getting a stimulus check but no check yet. I have moved since filing my taxes last year so it went to an old address however was having my mail forwarded and that ended last month!! Most of the postmen automatically deliver to my new address since its in the same village however I am stressed to the max with this! Why is it taking so long?

I keep getting locked out of the system now because my information apparently doesn't match their records (only started happening in the last 2 days) , so hopefully that means I've actually been processed!
