Right -- well I'm preparing to ask my brother to ship me a big old bottle of Ibuprofens from the US -- you know, like the 500-pill (or more) container you get at Wal-Mart for cheeeap (compared to what you can get here).  I take them in prescription-strength dose (4 pills--800 mg) when I take them, so I go through them faster.  Anyway, was trying to come up with some other ideas of things he might put in a box for me, in case he didn't want to send just that.

Like some of you, I had a hard time thinking of things (foods, treats, etc) that I actually miss from the States.  I have plenty of Neosporin & other meds like that right now, so I was trying to think of some foods.  Here is what I've come up with so far, but will try to prioritise them somehow:

Really good BBQ sauce (like Gates of KC-MO, but he prolly can’t get this living in Atlanta—he might be able to order it online though)
Toll House choc chips
Triscuits – love the herby ones
Chopped green chilis in the tin
Rotel tomatoes
Progresso italian style breadcrumbs
Bisquick – I have a hard time finding it consistently here, and even then it’s a tiny box.
Maybe even that evil (but great for making queso) stuff – Velveeta
Oh – maybe Crisco shortening!

(No wonder I’ve lost 50 lbs since moving here!)

When you have people ships things to you – like food and/or meds, what do you tell them to put on the customs forms, etc?

you should get extra Nestle chips and sell them here-you'd make a FORTUNE!!!

edit: Carolyn-can't you get your gp to prescribe you 800 mg tablets of ibuprofen? I know I'm gonna ask mine for a Naproxen rx, since it's not OTC here..

I like Jack in the box!!  They have great taco, burger, well just lots of things.

***drool***

Jack in the Box tacos...they closed all of the JITBs in Chicago at least 15 years ago, but when I went to Hawaii in '97, I craved it every day...yum

D'oh! I gotta stop reading this thread :(

I miss Chicago-style stuffed pizza and rice krispies(they don't taste right here), along with Catalina French dressing and nestle chips(which I think I may have mentioned a few times... ::))

Well I mentioned it to my GP once, but since I take it occasionally (not every day) -- he more or less said I could just buy it over the counter as needed.  And you can only buy small packs of it -- which I find sort of annoying.  Plus the humongous bottle from Wal-Mart is only around $10-15 (or so) as I recall.

LOL -- next time I go to the States, maybe I should start bootlegging Toll House choc chips over here? ;D

I don't miss any foods from the US, but the lack of big ibuprofen bottles drives me mad, too! I stocked up when I was back over in the fall, but I don't go very often, so it's not really enough. So I have friends send them to me for Christmas! Nothing says HO!HO!HO! like a big bottle of Nuprin under the tree!

May have to resort to that!  I got a 500-pill bottle when I was there last June & I'm now down to my last 20 or so.  Partly, DH discovered how wonderfully it works -- when he had a sports injury -- so he dipped into my stash. :P

I can stock up for you when I go home in July. It doesn't work for me.

Thanks, snupy.  If all goes according to plan (fingers crossed) -- I think we are going to the States in April/May.  This time, I'm buying more than one bottle!

You settling in alright?  (Send me a PM if you like.) :)

What bugs me about the ibuprofin, and other medicines here, is that they will only let you buy like, what is it...two packets at a time? And they only have 16 tabs in there!!!! When I first moved here, I was with my hubby, and we were trying to buy like four packets of pain relievers, and the check out lady said we could only purchase two. I asked why. She said it was the law, something about people being able to get too much of a medicine at once. I said, 'Yes, but I bet I could go to a garden center and get my hands on about as much RAT POISON as I wanted!!!' She looked surprised, and said 'yes, that's probably true'. Go figure.

Not just that, but you could also do the rounds buying 2 packets of ibuprofen at each store all day until you had hundreds of them! It's a completely nonsensical law.

that's very true.  you know..my friend lives in oregon, and late last year they passed a law limiting the number of boxes of a particular type of cold medicine that a person could buy...i think it was sudafed.  but their reasoning in doing that was because there is some ingredient in the medication that is used to make methamphetamines.  now they have to go thru this whole process of showing their drivers license and registering in order to buy it.

i could understand if this country was limiting purchases on specific meds for that reason.  but anything else just seems kinda stupid.  and while we are at it, i don't really care for the "extra strength" stuff being behind the counter at most shops.  if it's not prescription, it should be out on the floor with the rest of the stuff if you ask me.

hmm...maybe this wasn't the proper place to post seeing how i'm not talking about food anymore....

One of my friends from the UK said they would post me some WKD blue....then I found out TN has a law where you can mail alcohol.  :\\\'(

That stuff is lethal! One tsp of Sudafed and I'm like a speed freak. I cannot take any of that stuff!! I feel so ill!

I agree about it being silly to hide the OTC stuff behind the counter. Why should I have to ask for a laxative?!? Talk about embarrassing!  :P

The 'reason' I've always heard is that they are afraid we're all out to buy loads of ibuprofen (or laxatives, or whatever) so we can go home & overdose on it... ::)  Oh yeah -- I really feel the urge to do that...especially with LAXATIVES!  Yep, if there was ever something I wanted to do myself to death, it would be to shi*....'erm well nevermind.
