I've never had beetroot or black currant. I'm glad to know that purple candies are not grape though, I'd probably be disturbed if I ate one and expected grape flavor! I'll have to try them both to see if I like them. I'm brave!

You just peel it and then cook it!

But you must be a bit prepared - everything it touches will turn purple.

I had it grated in a salad once, that was nice.

I've never had beetroot

Beetroot is also known as simply 'beet' or 'beets' in the US - I've heard that it's a pretty popular vegetable to eat over there, although I think perhaps UK beetroot is of a different variety than US beet.

THANK YOU for posting this.  I thought I was the only one here with that opinion.  I can't even stand the smell of it.  And I hate how purple candies like Starbursts and Skittles are blackcurrant flavored. Yuck!

I'm the complete opposite - blackcurrant is my favourite Skittles/Starburst flavour and I have to hold my nose at the smell of 'grape flavour' (I've never come across a real grape that actually tastes anything like grape flavoured candy).

I don't really understand how blackcurrant can seem like an unpleasant flavour, but then, I was born and raised with it (Ribena is one of my favourite fruit drinks) and didn't taste the grape flavour until I visited the US as a teenager. I'm afraid I was very disappointed when my aunt offered me some sparkling grape juice and I took a sip thinking it would taste like Schloer - unfortunately, all I got was a mouthful of 'grape Skittle flavour' - not nice at all, lol!!

haha! That's kinda funny to hear the reverse of it. I can imagine that "grape" flavor is strange to someone not used to it. You're totally right that it doesn't really taste like grapes. You could probably argue the same thing for "strawberry" flavored candies. They never taste like what real strawberries taste like. They just taste "pink" to me  [smiley=bleck.gif]

When I had my first roast dinner with DB's family, his mother warned me that the blackcurrant jelly would taste a bit like cranberry sauce. Well, since I'm the person who needs a whole can of cranberry sauce to her self every Thanksgiving, I loved it!!  ;D

It doesn't taste quite the same, but it does seem to be a similar flavor.

I don't know, something about beets/beetroot just makes me not want to try it!

Hmm... I may not like it then since I really don't like cranberry sauce (or cranberry anything for that matter). I'll still give it a shot though.

Yeah, you never know - I hate cranberry sauce/juice, but I love blackcurrant flavours. In fact, one of my favourite desserts is vanilla cheesecake drizzled with summer fruit sauce - which has blackcurrants and redcurrants in it - delicious :)!!

Check this one out - raspberries, strawberries, blackberries and blackcurrants... yum :):

Blackcurrant is vile. Loathe it. True, natural grape flavor is great but the artificial stuff is pretty bad.

I don't like pickled beets at all. The only thing I really like picked is dill pickles though.

I do like beets shredded in salad and my mother used to make a cold summer borscht topped with sour cream that was too die for.

As for beets being different than beet root, I don't think so. The fresh ones in the markets sure look the same to me. There may be some differences in variety but I seriously doubt there's any real difference in taste.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

Since I don't eat beetroot, I wasn't sure if there was a difference in taste, but thought there might be. I did a quick online search for beetroot and found that there were several different varieties around the world. Apparently, the main US and UK varieties are slightly different colours, so I guessed that maybe they tasted slightly different - I don't actually know the answer myself ::).

That's the best thing about it, in my opinion!  ;D
