I am in the SF Bay Area and have been here for 14 years now - 1 year of that was spent in Detroit, MI.

My brother moved to Detroit many years ago, and I got my first visit to the US to see him as a graduation present after college.  I fell in love with the country during my visit (I didn't know Detroit's reputation at the time) and vowed that if ever a work opportunity came up, I would jump on it.

Five years later I applied for a job with a small American computer consulting company in SF and got the job.  The company was run by 2 Ozzies and they specialised in bringing over Ozzies, Brits and Europeans.

This was before the days of the internet - little did I know the SF Bay Area was one of the most expensive places in the US.  If I had known, I may well have never taken the job.  But that would have been a bad choice in retrospect.

I left my girlfriend (now my wife) behind in Plymouth and we had a long distance relationship for 2 years.  We got married in Plymouth and then she moved out here with me.

Originally I was only going to come to the US for a couple of years to see how it went - and I am still here 14 years later.

I do miss the UK (and especially Devon) though.  All the things you so eloquently described.  Plus the footy, pubs, family, friends, the ability to stroll in the open countryside (no way you can do that over here unless you visit a state park).

I love the coffee at Capn' Jaspers - but I always have liked coffee made with hot milk, long before lattes became the rage.

I haven't read all 17 pages, so I don't know if some one has said this yet, but I HATE when someone says-

"been there, done that, bought the t-shirt"

That drives me crazy!
What if the Hokey Pokey is what it's all about?

It's completely a personal thing, but I absolutely abhor the phrase "it's pi**ing down rain".  Makes me want to retch. :-X

Oh, I don't like "pissing down rain" either.  :( I also don't like "teaching your grandmother to suck eggs" or whatever it is.  I don't know if I've remembered it exactly right but I think it's a yucky expression.

OH, and you know what I really REALLY hate.  When people say 'I was shitting myself'.  That is so vulgar and yucky.  I HATE it.

YES!  Oh, and another is when someone says something 'went tits up'.

And since I seem to be on an anatomical rant, I'll add the word 'belly' to my list of words that annoy me.  Gives me the creeps in a big way.

Word - from the hip hop culture.  Means "fo sho"  ;D

Tranlated:  You aren't kidding, I agree, definately, for sure.

Example:  Person 1: "That was the best pizza I've ever eaten!"  Person 2: "Word."

...the whole damn thing will turn
and return redefined, rearranged, rearranged...

Heehee!

When I was in college, a group of us at a party once debated whether 'moist' was the best or worst word in the English language.  I can't remember what the final decision was, but by the end of the night none of us could say or hear the word without collapsing into fits of hysterical giggles.

The answer to the next question is, yes, I believe there were some controlled substances involved. ;)

the way the verb 'sat'  is misused all the time by all sorts of people..  wrong conjugation  etc..   'we were sat across from..'  'So I was sat there waiting..'  'you need to be sat down before I dismiss you.'

innit--- ??? ::)
