I got an ove-glove and a magnet for my graduation from FMIL. Two years ago I got a purple and gold egg for Christmas - it looks like something you would find at the dollar store. I'm kinda dreading xmas this year.

My sister and mom live with my grandparents. My sister used to have a bedroom upstairs, but then decided she wanted to move downstairs. She was about 12 at the time of the move and left alot of her childhood toys and things upstairs in her old room. My grandmother then took over that room as a "junk room." One day my grandmother was going through some drawers of my sister's things and found some beads that spelled my sister's name and decided that she must have forgotten to give them to her. (nevermind they were in a drawer full of my sister's stuff) So she wrapped them up, and made this huge show of giving my sister something "really special."

The beads were white blocks with letters etched on and two or three round ones - basketball, music note, and something else. In all, they cost less than $5.

My sister was 15 at the time. After opening them, she was so upset that she walked out of the room. My grandmother went on a tirade about how "rude" and "ungracious" my sister was. In reality, I had brought the beads back for my sister after a trip to Florida. They had broken, and she had never bothered to restring them. My grandmother just wouldn't listen and insisted that SHE had bought them for her "as a very special gift for Christmas"

Ha! This thread was funny to read. :) Some of these gifts are hysterical.  Especially JessicaKate's stellar trophy.  ;D

This week I saw an advertisement on my TV for an amazingly awful Christmas gift idea:

Popular nighttime drama actor sitting in front of a Xmas background and addressing the camera....

Wanna do something special for your woman this Christmas?
Schedule her Pap Smear.
Pap Smears save lives.
Give her the gift that even Santa can't give her.

Xmas music and a fade into next commercial........

Seriously? Schedule her pap smear? Oh. My. Gawd.  Not that I think women shouldn't get pat smears. And I'm sure they do save a lot of lives.  But to open a gift and see a certificate saying that a very special doctors appointment for my private area has been purchased for me?????

Not EVEN cool. I would be pissed!

Just another tiny little example of why i could never live in the US again!

Too funny, right?
At first I thought it was a joke. Honestly.

Here's a clip of it on YouTube if you wanna watch it:

The actor is Chris Beetem and I'm sure this is spuring his career to new heights.

But a pap smear doesn't cost anything if you've got even basic medical insurance in the US, right?  I think it's not really supposed to be a gift, but just a reminder, because it really is important.  I think the commercial is just misguided, they should have just made it a public service announcement kind of thing and done away with the Christmas angle altogether.

The first year I was here my MiL got my SiL bras.  My SiL doesn't wear them, and of course, my MiL knows that. For several years they have bought razors for my husband.  He grows facial hair extremely quickly and doesn't bother shaving over the weekends or at all on holidays (we call his longer beards "Christmas beards" even if they grow on a summer holiday).  Some of the worst presents are "hinty" presents.

When we were kids, we used to buy my dad a tie every year.  My dad was a printer and rarely had wear business suits.

I have never gotten a free pap smear.  It was either paid by me or through insurance.

I guess that's what I meant; if you've got basic insurance it shouldn't cost you anything.  I do realize many people don't even have basic insurance though, but I imagine a clinic or a Planned Parenthood type of place would do them for a reduced charge.

Planned Parenthood does do them on a sliding scale fee.  I am sure there are other organizations or practices that do the same.

MIL keeps giving me books and articles about women the world over who've been raped, abused, locked up, grew up destitute but then started their own business and got rich, landed great jobs, etc.  All used.  And will tell me, 'She had a hard life and made good.'

I'm going to start trawling the charity shops for books on clearing clutter, cleaning and exercise books and give them to her whilst saying, 'Her house was a fecking tip and she sorted it out,' or 'She used to weigh 50st now she's only 30.'
