I am going to quote a woman who tried marmite and wrote about the experience in her blog.  As she stated she would rather go down on a hobo than eat marmite again.  I concur with her synopsis.

I love grapes as a fruit, but grape-flavoured stuff tastes nothing like grapes to me, and is absolutely vile.

ITA with this :)

Is it just blackcurrant-flavoured things you don't like, or blackcurrants themselves? I'm curious because they seem to flavour everything with grape in the US. I love grapes as a fruit, but grape-flavoured stuff tastes nothing like grapes to me, and is absolutely vile.

I've never been a big fan of grape flavored stuff either, but would still take it over blackcurrant any day. :-\\\\ Blackcurrant tastes of rancid raisins to me. :P

Is it veggie? My friend was telling me it had "meat flavor" in it??

There is a product called Bovril which comes in a similar size & shape jar, which is beef extract, (as opposed to Marmite which is yeast extract) so maybe your friend was thinking of that?

Groan!  ;)   I can see you having to explain that one though!

I haven't had a mug of hot Bovril for years, but very warming on a cold winter night.

Marmite is good mixed with peanut butter  :)

I like em both. I even like blackcurrent too. Of course I also like haggis and black pudding and white pudding.

Something I find vile beyond vile? Mature cheddar cheese. I love cheese, but there is something about mature cheddar that makes me want to boak!

I love it. Hostess Twinkies make me want to boak.

Here's something really gross I found on Wikipedia:

Quote
Deep-fried Twinkies

A deep-fried Twinkie takes the popular Hostess Twinkie cake, freezes it, dips it into batter and deep frying it to create a variation on the traditional snack cake. According to the Hostess website, Christopher Sell invented the "fried twinkie" at the ChipShop, his restaurant in Brooklyn, New York. According to CNN, the dish was adopted by Chris Mullen, but invented at a "Brooklyn restaurant."

It was described by a The New York Times story in this way: "Something magical occurs when the pastry hits the hot oil. The creamy white vegetable shortening filling liquefies, impregnating the sponge cake with its luscious vanilla flavor... The cake itself softens and warms, nearly melting, contrasting with the crisp, deep-fried crust in a buttery and suave way. The piece de resistance, however, is a ruby-hued berry sauce, adding a tart sophistication to all that airy sugary goodness."

The deep-fried Twinkie was a runaway success after Mullen and his brother started selling it at county fairs in mid-August. "We sold 26,000 Twinkies in 18 days," By 2002, the Arkansas State Fair had introduced the fried Twinkie to great popular acclaim, and the notion spread to other state fairs across the U.S., as well as some establishments that specialize in fried foods. Fried Twinkies are sold throughout the U.S. in state fairs, as well as ball park games.

Love that "tart sophistication"...  :)

The Arkansas State Fair is obviously where gourmets hang out...

Of course these are unheard of in Britain!

I've not tried British peanut butter, but my husband claims it tastes different.

It does taste completely different, luckily they sell Skippy here.  I have adapted to many different foods but I cannot do british pb or Marmite.   On Marmite's website you choose love or hate it on the home page, I definitely fall into the hate it category, but my american dog loves it as well as my husband.

I haven't tried marmite on anything but I do enjoy marmite crisps though. I haven't tried English pb to me it looks like baby poo or at least the jar Dh showed me when I first moved to the UK in July 04. Dh friends daughter was at our house a while back her sister dropped her off without her having any dinner. so I made her a American style pb&j sandwich she said my pb was alot better than the pb she has had before here in the UK. I usually have a PBJ at least once sometimes twice a week either for lunch sometimes for dinner if I'm not that hungry but know I have to eat something. Dh likes to have Marmite on his crumpets now & then. whenever we go to the States we always get a couple big containers of Jif pb mainly cause none of the store around us carry my kind of pb. I don't like anything blackcurrant I think it is evil as well I prefer grape.

Yum!

While Googling about organic peanut butter, which is what we eat in our house, I found a page that alleges that all peanut products are liable to be contaminated with aflatoxin, which is produced by the aspergillus fungus, and that the highest concentration is in the stuff you buy in the store where they take peanuts and grind them into peanut butter for you while you wait.

You are a braver person than me.  I ate black pudding, didn't like it and refused to eat it when I heard what was in it.  Marmite mixed with peanut butter, my poor little tummy just flip flopped.     ;)  :)

I've got to stick up for the poor blackcurrant here. I vastly prefer blackcurrant to grape! ;D

I'm rather fond of scrambled eggs on buttered toast with Marmite. I think I could develop a taste for it. Peanut butter I eat only rarely, and pretty much only on celery with raisins. And I don't have a problem with Sunpat.

Guess I'm just weird. :P

I love Tiger Bread and marmite crisps when I am in the mood for them, but not actually Marmite.
