Dill pickles.... Sorta
« on: February 09, 2009, 11:03:03 AM »
Found dill pickles at Morrisons. As the subject says... sorta.

They were by Krakus (I think. We've already thrown away the jar, and they went fast.) and came in a big jar with a blue and white label.

They did have a dill flavour, and were close to what I've been craving. Unfortunately, they had a bit too much sweetness. It was like halfway through each bite, the pickle turned from a Vlasic dill to a Vlasic sweet.

I'd buy them again because they had a nice spice and Adam liked them a lot. But they have inspired me to make my own dill pickles this year.
Another shameless promotion for www.mclevey.com, the best place on the internet to buy art.

Yes, I'm going to try my hand at pickles this year, too. Soon as my other half grows me some gherkins.

We regularly buy pickles from the Polish food section of ASDA.  They're called something like Merkos...?  Anyway, BEST pickles I've found in the UK - better than the Krakus brand, IMO.  Quite crunchy and sour - lovely!  A touch garlicky, but perfect sliced onto a sandwich, yummmmmmm.

OMG, I ate a jar of these standing over the sink yesterday (I am pregnant, so its okay) I think they cost .74p a jar and they are goooooooooood. The one I had had 2 big pickled garlic cloves in the bottom, I ate those too, thhank goodness I am already pregnant as my husband wouldn't touch me. Next week I get two jars. Also, they do a super cheap jar of pickled veggies that I love, cabbage, carrots, chilis! Love them!

Hi racheee and Aless,

If you have a jar of those on hand, would you mind listing the ingredients if it's not too much trouble?

Thank you tons in advance.

I looked them up on Asda online and couldnt find them.

In other news I have tried 3 different brands from Tesco and all of them were blech sweet kind of bread and butter pickles.

I have one jar that we bought for a huge price at a local American import type store. I cherished those and was sad when they ran out. But I found out putting some thin sliced cucumbers in the brine and letting them sit works fairly well. You just have to be patient enough to let them sit. DH know not to EVER throw that jar of pickle juice away :)

I think they mean Melis. It's there.

racheee, what I want to know is which ice cream goes best with them: chocolate chip cookie dough or strawberry cream? ;)

Thank goodness, I haven't mixed the two yet. But I am only 14 weeks, plenty of time to try this out.

FWIW, I don't think I've ever seen them on ASDA online - they don't tend to list as many 'world foods' as the physical stores seem to stock.  Or maybe it's just me.

I think it IS Melis, but they're re-designed the labels.  I'll check when I get home ;D - and probably eat a few in the process!!

Tesco had something like a dill pickle in their International foods aisle.  I think it was in the Jewish food section, but can't remember the name.  I missed the sweet baby gherkins when I was there.   Could not find anything even close.
