Nuclear.... I wanna scream from the hilltops, "It's 'new-clear,' people. Not 'new-Q-ler!'"

Well, we have W to thank for that one.

DS's head teacher at one of his junior schools used to use "thankyou" instead of "thank you" in her newsletters. As if it was all one word. It really irritated me coming from a head teacher.

"I'm not being funny, right...."

Bugs me every time.

Doubtful. It's a pretty common mispronounciation. It was even a part of the plot of a Simpsons episode.
And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say
"Thank you for being a friend!"

I work with another american man and I always laugh when he says 'Arsey' and the other day he said '... and then she got all arsey with me....' then looked at me and said 'what are you laughing at?' and I said, 'Im really sorry, but that is just one word you and i are not aloud to say because it just doesn't sound right'.

Maybe its just me.. but it sounds funny when he says it and he's from Georgia and still sounds funny when i say it and im from NY.

"Are you quite sure there isn't any chance you might get back together?" - from various people including my parents, when my ex wife & I separated; from me: "Well, I asked her boyfriend, and he says 'no' - and so do all the others."

That shut 'em up.

"Are you quite sure there isn't any chance you might get back together?"

In a similar vein, "When are you going to get married?" when I was still single at 40.

Or 'Do you miss your family?'

Seriously?   You'd ask a stranger that?  eff off.

My current hates are those who say 'should of' when they mean 'should have', and 'prolly' instead of 'probably'.

Vicky

Are they saying "should of" or slurring "should've"?

Or 'Do you miss your family?'

Seriously?   You'd ask a stranger that?  eff off.

ohoh! Or "so how do you like our country?"  uhh...I like it or I wouldn't be here!

But the BEST thing I hear that I wish people wouldn't say is "so you do know so-and-so? They went to Penn State too".  Really?  Because my college had over 100k students enrolled at over 20 different sites throughout the state.  I'm sure I must know your friend's brother, because I happen to know every single person registered at my former university.  What's that? They graduated in 1982? Sure, I was only three then, but we alumni stick together. I'm sure I've met them at an alumni function. We only have nearly a million alumni members worldwide.

Oh, and don't forget - "oh, you're from PA? my cousin's sister's boyfriend's hairdresser is from x" and then they expect you to either know the person or know where they're from.

Sometimes I want to carry around a map of PA with me when I meet people to show them how large the darned state is.

I find a lot of people even write it as "should of."

wow, really?

I know I tend to slur my words. I could easily imagine someone thinking I said "should of", "would of", or "could of"...but I'd never write it the way I pronounce it!

Unfortunately "of" for "have" is all too common. Where I live in Bristol, many people say the "of" very clearly, and I have seen the written form of this error perpetrated by people from all over the English speaking world. I particularly hate its use after "had" in such abominations as "If I had of known, I would of told you."

"Are" for "our" is another.
