Yep, I think coleslaw is almost the English equivalent to ranch dressing in Texas. It's used as a condiment or garnish for a lot of things - Hubs likes it on pizza, toast, sandwiches, and all sorts of other stuff. I wouldn't mind cole slaw, but I hate carrots, especially raw. I like the cole slaws I have had without carrots, but a lot of people say that ain't cole slaw.  ;)

It's cole slaw if you say it is! You can even make it with fruit - I've had lovely red cabbage and apple slaw, as well as a lovely spicy one with mango in it!

DH likes biscuits, and he even liked biscuits with sausage gravy, although he did argue the point that it isn't gravy - more like cream sauce. It was a huge debate over whether it could even be called "cream gravy".  :P

I've honestly never really understood the appeal of that kind of gravy. It just looks/tastes weird to me.  :P

My mom makes a gorgeous coleslaw with cabbage, lime yoghurt, cashews, and mandarin oranges.

It ain't.  ;)  Call it ole slaw. Seriously cole slaw is one of these dishes that has a thousand variations. Do it however you want and just call it J's cole slaw. I once had one with pineapple in it and thought this is gonna suck big time. Turned out it was actually quite nice. For the odd occasion.

I always thought of cole slaw as a side dish rather than a condiment, though I can see how it could be used on a sandwich. I'll have to try that sometime and see. Just never thought about that. I mean why not, some people put what is effectively a basic sald on sandwhiches (lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onion, etc).

And I would say cole slaw is very popular in both UK and US.

Still tired of coteries and bans. But hanging about anyway.

My DH likes it on cold sandwiches - ham or whatnot, but he also likes it on burgers - apparently the hot beef with the cool cole slaw is something delicious. But, I haven't tried it because of the carrots, and I don't bother to make it myself without carrots because I just never think of it. But he also likes cole slaw on cold, crunchy toast. And on hot pizza. And things like that. I think the pizza thing is a bit weird, but considering I used to dip my pizza in ranch dressing, I can't really say much.  :P

I call cream gravy "grease flavoured white sauce" - mostly just to annoy my DB :D

Yeah, I think DH is a bit dubious of the cream gravy. I like it, but have an easily upset stomach, so all that grease doesn't do me any favours.  :-X I learned to live without it long before I moved here, so its ok with me.  ;)

Okay okay, I know coleslaw was a bad example but I was reaching! (and couldn't remember the British KFC sides).

On the topic of biscuits as an accompaniment to fried chicken, I also miss super-thick Texas toast served with chicken tenders & white gravy.  SO GOOD.

Big toast, but like garlicy as well.  At least that is what I have always seen.

Really thick bread toasted with butter on both sides. Not really garlicky, other than the frozen stuff called Texas toast, but that's not the same.

It's awesomely good dipped in cream gravy.  [smiley=blush.gif]
