DB was (hopefully) joking about naming one of our kids "Mufasa" from the Lion King. I looked at him puzzled, and asked, "what so we can call him Moo?".  He came up with "Fas or Fasa" for a nickname instead.

Yeah, there's a trend of giving nicknames as proper names.  There was a Charlie and an Alfie in my baby class at the hospital.  It's...not my taste.  I prefer giving the full name and then shortening to a nickname if desired.

My parents opted for Jill rather than Jillian because my Dad likes 1 syllable names, lol. Not exactly the same as Alfie for Alfred though..

My husband has heard more than enough on this subject and would cry if he knew I was discussing it.   :D

I grew up with a Stef.  Not Stephanie, or even Stefanie...just Stef.  I always felt kind of bad for her because people always wanted to call her Stephanie, but it just wasn't her name.  When she corrected them, she'd get looks.

It doesn't help that the clothes are SO CUTE and SO CHEAP. Seriously, my daughter can look good for like seven bucks. I can't look nothin' for seven bucks :D

I couldn't agree more! Osh Kosh BGosh has some AMAZING and durable clothes. Love buying from there, always getting coupons in the mail so I take full advantage. Now if only us adults could look good for 10$ or less. 8)

Huh.  I never really think of "Jill" as just a nickname for Jillian.  Surely it can be a nickname, but I think of Jill the same as John -- it could be something longer like Jonathan, but isn't necessarily.

I do know it's a personal bias, though, I think it's the "ie" on boys nicknames-as-full-names that makes it too informal as a proper, given name.  It's also possible that I am an older parent who was the child of older parents, so I probably have some seriously old fashioned thinking going on.   :D

Nothin' wrong with being old fashioned!  ;)

Yeah, and that "ie" is often used in girls' names or nicknames (Charlie for Charlotte) so might make the kid feel awkward.

You can't always rely on being original though. When we called our son Oliver it was still quite unusual - 26 years later and it's the most popular boy's name in 2010 according to the Office for National Statistics: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/specials/babiesnames_boys.asp. Still, he has posted the link with the comment 'Trendsetter' on his Facebook account!

Aww.. that would make me feel awkward as well.. The name I go by isn't my full name, but I've been going by it for sooo long that when I get called my full name it's only for official/legal or medical purposes. Still makes me feel weird when people call me by my first name lol

Daniel has been a popular name for years now.  I think it's a great name, (but I would as that's what I'm called :P)

My son and grandson are called Daniel. I think it's the best boy name there is!

Husband's name is Daniel.... Have to admit I have a soft spot for it too!  ;)

As far as girls names go, I've found myself really liking Lorelai-  I've only ever seen one person with that name, and I think it's kinda pretty.  Do you think it would be too different for the UK?
We stole countries with the cunning use of flags. Just sail around the world and stick a flag in. "I claim India for Britain!" They're going "You can't claim us, we live here! Five hundred million of us!" "Do you have a flag …? "What? We don't need a flag, this is our home, you bastards" "No flag, No Country, You can't have one! Those are the rules... that I just made up!...and I'm backing it up with this gun, that was lent to me from the National Rifle Association."

I always have been a fan of the name Chase for a boy.  DF is not a fan.  :-\\\\ But being a dog person, I explain that it's a lot better than "Fetch".  ;)

Its funny how personal picking baby names can be- and how personal experiences in life can make you really shy away from certain names- for example, someone who used to bully you in school or whatever.  Goodness, naming a child has to be so hard!

It's such a weird thing -- giving a name to this person you either haven't met or have only just met!  Although I guess you legally have something close to 40ish days to make it official.  We'd have been driven crazy by friends and relatives if we didn't share a name right away.   :D
