I just finished reading The Pact by Jodi Picoult and loved it so I'm now devouring My Sister's Keeper. I have this trend of avoiding really popular books while people are raving about them and then dipping in once the dust has settled.

Really enjoying her writing style, I have to say!

Started Brick Lane by Monica Ali yesterday afternoon (in between chapters of another non-fiction book I'm reading). :)

I'm Reading the Lipstick Jungle by Candace Bushnell.  It's pretty good so far.

That's another that's on my bookshelf waiting to be read. So many books, so little time!

Well get to it, woman -- especially while you're feeling poorly!  Hope you're better. :)  (We have loads of books on the shelf like that too though--mostly ones that Steve has read, most of my books aren't even over here yet.)

Loved it although it can be hard to get into her writing style.  I live right off Brick Lane so I was really excited to see the real thing when I got here! (read it before I moved over)

You know the very first bits of it (as I'm not far into the book yet at all!) reminded me a little bit of Arundhati Roy's The God of Small Things.  Have you read that?  I was just curious if Ali was being at all imitative of Roy's style, or if it was more of a sociocultural dynamic.  I've not made up my mind on the question and decided to see what I think at the end.

Yep read that as well (I'm a big big big reader).  I think Ali is different.  Wait until you get further in - you will find it is quite a different style.  Ali changes things a bit later in the way she illustrates time passing and events occuring.  One of my coworkers just read it and had a bit of hard time understanding if certain things actually happened or not.  Also I think it's harder to understand the social commentary she's written more than Roy - harder to decipher if you are not Indian/Bangladeshi/South Asian or familiar with them.  Roy was a lot easier in that way I think.  I'll be interested to hear what you think of it when you're done!  I found it quite heartbreaking at times...

Really enjoyed that book! Was just thinking about it yesterday.

I've read so many posts about Jodi Picault that I went out and picked up "My Sister's Keeper" and I CAN NOT put it  down! Great writing.

I've not read any of her books, but ... a housemate on "The Real World" was reading one last week and it put me right off!  :P

Don't let that stop you if you're interested. So far it's a very good book.

I have My Sister's Keeper here and just ordered The Pact (£0.01 on Amazon) after JennyDee's review.  I can't wait to start them!

"My Sister's Keeper" really is quite good and a tear-jerker as well!

Wait, the Real World, on in the UK!  When!!!

It was on at 8am on MTV -- they just finished the Austin series last week. I hope they'll be starting the next one soon!

I know, I know. It's just that when you see a half-naked bimbo from a reality show reading a book ... you kind of assume it's a crap book. I won't judge a bimbo by her cover next time! ;)
