It really isn't a religious book but rather a story based on a biblical story.

That makes me feel better about it! ;D

I'm not a bible buff either but I do admit that when I started reading it, I got the bible out to read the original story which did help.  There is a family tree at the beginning which was very helpful.  the premise of the book, is that Dina (character) is mentioned once in the bible (don't ask me to quote chapter and verse, because I can't  but I think she tells you in the book where to look) as being raped.  Anita diamant has expanded her story and what a story!!  Where she describes life in the "red tent" where the women are banished during their periods, is fascinating - that is the first half.  The second half is after Dinah gets "raped", she goes away from her family and becomes a midwife.

It really isn't a religious book but rather a story based on a biblical story.

It was kind of like Child of the Morning by Pauline Gedge - about a woman pharoh in Egypt.  Another good read.

Thank you for the synopsis, I think I will give it a read.  I think I was afraid it was going to be too much for me with the bible stuff, but I love the fact that she took a subject like this and expanded on it.  Just don't tell my mother, she will be upset I didn't listen to her to begin with.  I don't think we have any bibles in the house though, and I'll want to read that story.  Does anyone know if you can read it on-line?

I love these books which take a minor character in another story and tell their tale. Ahab's Wife was another one like that and it was a beautiful story - and made me feel much better about never being able to finish Moby Dick!

You can download it for free from: http://www.topicsites.com/ebooks/free-pocket-pc-downloads.htm

You then need MSReader - which is free from Microsoft.

I'm reading In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. (OK, OK. I saw the movie and then had to read the book.) I bought it last Thursday and am already most of the way through it. Really compelling and well written so far.

Oooh, good book! I remember doing a book report about it when I was in 9th grade! That turned me onto Truman Capote -- although In Cold Blood is unlike any of his other stuff. I actually prefer the other stuff, but it's all good!

I just read it not long ago for the same reason.

Gives you chills.

I'm reading The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory, so far so good.

Just read it although I must say having seen the movie first, I wasn't quite as excited about the book!  I think it was because I had these visual images of how the people were and how events happened, and that threw things off for me.  Also I knew how the story ended and I just wasn't as into it as I thought I would be.  Rule #1 for me - always read the book first....

I loved Brick Lane but I'm unsure if I liked it or The God of Small Things better -- they are quite different, as geetak pointed out earlier even though I saw some resemblance at the beginning of the story.  I'm now casting about for what to get into next...so many on our shelves to read (mostly things DH has read as my books from the States aren't here :().

I just finished "Little Alters Everywhere" by Rebecca Wells

I'm not sure if it a pre-quel to Divine Secrets of the YA-YA Sisterhood or what..has anyone else read it?

I read it.  Yes it is a prequel and I hated it!  i have no desire to read the latest Ya-ya book at all.

The whole thing about the mother sexually abusing her kids was too much for me.  and it really gave a whole new meaning of the word forgiveness, in the first ya-ya book.  I don't think I could ever  be that forgiving!
