I recently finished Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy -- which I mostly loved, but felt a little letdown by the last book.

This weekend, I read a short novel entitled Property by Valerie Martin, which I recommend.  (If you're into literary awardism, it won the 2003 Orange prize, over Donna Tartt's The Little Friend and Zadie Smith's The Autograph Man.)

I think Property was mentioned in this thread a while ago with mixed reviews - I for one really liked it but a few others didn't.

The Little Friend - I'm still not sure what to make of it.  I liked the descriptions and the way she writes, but I wasn't thrilled with a lot of the story and I sure as heck hated the ending!!  I liked The Secret History a lot more than this one.  And who is the little friend anyway?  Sorry Twistedncycnical, I know you didn't ask what I thought of this one but couldn't help but jump in!  ;D

Oh forgot to mention I read Persuasion by Jane Austen today.  So much for my resolve to not read anything other than finance until my exam!   :P

I'm glad you did!! I couldn't figure that book out to save my life! It was weird and a bit sad . . . but what was it abou?t Was there a message? It was very long and very involved but I turned the last page thinking the same thing as I did in the middle of the book - what the hell is this about?

Just finished the Ice Queen by Alice Hoffman.  A good, short, escapist read.  Always a pleasure to read Hoffman's writing!

I didn't get through Life of Pi.  I just didn't like it at all.  DH read it and said the last 2/3rds was great, the first 1/3rd not so much.  I got stuck in the first third.  My sister read it and loved it as did a good friend of mine.

Hey, what did you think of The Little Friend?

I have not read that yet, though we do have it (Steve has read it).  I was eyeballing it after I finished Property.  Maybe soon.

Yeah, I couldn't remember if it had been talked about before on here or not.  I didn't want to like the book as I started to get into it -- and most of the characters weren't very likeable, but as I continued - I began to 'get' it & thought she did a good job at what she was trying to depict.

Yeah it was a nice story - I had never read it before and I liked it.  It was a nice break!

Yeah I have to say I wasn't as thrilled with Life of Pi as I thought I would be after reading all the stunning reviews.  It was ok I guess, but it was kind of hard to read and I felt a little unsatisfied when it was finished.  I re-read it hoping to get a little more out of it, but still felt the same.   :-\\\\

The Little Friend
- it was just weird, I guess!  I also couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be 'about' or what the message was in it!

Life of Pi is one of my all-time favourites, Geeta! I thought the ending was kind of fantastic.

I just had to read Ladies Who Lunch because an aunt lent it to me. Ugh. That was 48 hours of my life wasted. Besides the fact that it was silly, preposterous chick-lit (and I do like some chick-lit), it also brought back horrible memories of the Junior League set down south. Ugh.

Now I'm onto Labyrinth for my book club. I haven't got very far yet, but so far so good. Has anyone read it?
