However, supermarket ice cream here is nasty.  I won't touch Carte d'Or.  We usually get Waitrose own brand or Green and Black's, which at least contain actual cream and no vegetable oil.

This! I've found some local places I like, but supermarket ice cream just is not the real deal without getting overpriced single serve tubs. I find the quality of supermarket ice cream to be far lower than it was in the US.

I agree about Carte d'Or, but supermarkets also sell Ben & Jerry's and Haagen Dazs and lots of the same brands you see in the US.

For supermarket ice cream, I buy Mackies - yum!!

We have an ice cream maker & make our own too.

I'm jealous of your ice cream makers...  my freezer is the size of a postage stamp and the space that I do have is filled up with cabbage  ;)

That is darned-near philosophy....

I need to dig out my ice-cream maker and see if it still works.
My very 'helpful' partner was washing up and submerged its electric motor... I haven't tried it since.

Warm Beer. Sorry. no can do.  its why i stick with cider

It's not warm, it's cellar temperature which ia about 12-14c, anything colder and you start to kill the flavour.

My local has a 13 degree cellar, and uses chilled lines to bring the temps down to 11c.  I wouldn't want it any colder than that.

Are you serious?? The best ice cream I've ever had is in the UK! Where are you going for your ice cream fix? Because you need to find a better spot!

Marine Ices in Chalk Farm used to be the place for ice cream but I hear they've sold it and the restaurant has gone downhill.  The ice cream is now made somewhere else so may also be lousy.

I do get Carte D'Or sometimes because it is not made with eggs like a lot of the high quality ice creams which often contain egg yolks.  I also do like Mr. Whippy as it's just fun and reminds me of childhood (Good Humor in the US) summer days.  I'm not that fussy, I like both low and high quality.

But I have found that Brymore ice cream is egg-free and high quality.  You can't find it in supermarkets, but our local deli carries it.  You can visit the actual dairy farm where it is made.  There is a big ice cream parlour there and you can pet the cows which are the most pampered and clean cows I've ever seen!

Off topic, but I met MrRed5 on a blind date(set up by mutual friends) in Houston.  Prior to going out we spoke on the phone.  In my ignorance I asked if it was true that English people drank warm beer.  He replied like you did TykeMan, cellar temperature.
He then proceeded to ask me if I liked curry.  I had never had a curry (I lead a pretty sheltered life) so I fibbed a bit and said that I did.  Not sure if we would have actually gone out on the date if I had said no as he does love his curries.  :)
Turns out that yes, I do love curries.  16 years and two children later I'm glad I fibbed a bit.

Ha ha! Sort of reminds me when DW first visited over here and we went out for curry with some friends. First time she'd had Indian food and she said after, "err...it was ok, not sure I'd want it again", did make me think how we'd manage as it's a common thing with friends! Then after she moved here she tried a local butcher's pork pie at Christmas and said she wasn't keen! If you know Yorkshire you know how we like pork pies (from a butcher, not supermarket)
Anyway - 5 years on and she loves them both!

I'll second Brymore ice cream.  Black Cherry Whim Wham is my favourite closely followed by the Ginger flavour.

A lot of supermarkets will also stock small amounts of niche makers (like Brymore) who are local to their area.  I think is particularly true of the more upmarket places like Waitrose and Booths.  It's also worth looking at Deli's etc who might stock local produce.

I think Losely (?) is a good make.
