I missed it but DW said the BBC was parading around the Olympic park the cut out statue of Phelphs and getting people's reactions.  I'd have loved to see that.

Apparantly, there is uproar because NBC didn't show the men's 100 metres final!  There is a discussion going on about whether or not they will insist that in 4 years time it is held after midnight so that it is prime time for the US audience!

What is the US coverage like?  From what they are saying on the radio here, NBC are showing all the basketball and the events that US will win, like the swimmig, but little else is live.

It's sort of true, but not entirely.  Yes, NBC is showing a lot of the sports the US excels at, but those are also sports (like basketball) that are hugely popular even if it isn't the Olympics.  To me, it would be equivalent to US media commenting that European countries are airing mainly soccer/football.

Because the US averages 12 hours behind Beijing, it makes it difficult to watch much live save for the evening or early morning events.  They are showing a wide variety of sports, but mostly by tape delay.  You can watch quite a few events live streaming online, though.

Thank goodness for the Olympics being on tv...because daytime tv isn't very good... so at least I can watch something interesting while being signed off work... I've seen more olympics than I ever want to!

Ah, but that is the thing...we are getting almost no football!

Exactly, and they are showing much more events on the sister networks. NBC gets the most viewership since even people with basic cable or no only get local stations still get it, so they show the most popular sports there.

I don't think they'll request to have events held after midnight. We're used to tape delayed Olympic events. It just so happens to be lucky that with the 12 hour difference, they were able to show some events live. I actually somewhat prefer the taped ones because they don't run until 2:00 in the morning like they have this year!

lol - there are are 204 countries in many time zones competing, i don't see how any country or broadcaster could be so arrogant as to request the events schedule be set so as to suit their own populations veiwing times.

I wouldn't put that past NBC though!
Besides, the US runs the rest of the world, didn't you know?  :P

Yeah, I don't think this would be a viable option at all!  Surely it can't be good for the athletes to be running and swimming and diving at 2 am!

NBC pay $billion for the rights to show the Olympics.  They already negotiated to get the swimming events moved so that Phelps' medal races would be live at US prime time.

Well they were certainly on to a winner with Phelphs - not sure the Jamaican Broadcasting Authority has quite the same funding so there will be plenty of early morning partying going on there right now - Bolt was pretty amazing !

Have i missed it or have we not got a Gold today..... :)
