Can you give an example?

At a restaurant? "Can I have my check"

Can I have my bill?

That tamales appear to be much easier to make than I would have thought (per a how-to website I looked at, along with a few other recipes) and that I think I will be able to give them a try in the near future, once I can order the supplies.  Yippeeeee!!!

Yes, restaurant... I have not tried it anywhere else

I was at Ciao Bella (the first one on the top of my head) and I asked for a check and the waiter looked at me was not sure what was going on.  My co workers are all giggling.  He got the manager and I asked for the check again.  After a few seconds of hard thinking, he said... you mean "bill?"  Then he chuckled and told me to say bill because no one says check.  All of my co-workers chimed in and said people only say "bill" here.

Maybe I missed an inside joke

I guess it might have appeared as if you were asking the waiter to pay YOU with a cheque?  :D

My dad insists on using 'check' here just to piss me off.
Ok, so I'm smug.

That despite being ridiculously spoiled by my mom while I was gallivanting around England for 4 months, my chocolate lab still prefers me to all other living things.  ;D

That you can cut fiber optic wires and they will still glow at the end.... I really didn't know that, but after someone told me, I just trimmed the wires on this tiny Christmas tree on my desk and it's true!!!!   ;D

The reason for that is because in fibre optic wires, the light bounces along the cable from one side to the other, with very little light energy lost to the surroundings (called 'total internal reflection'), until it reaches the end of the cable and emerges as light - so it doesn't matter where the end is, or where you cut it, all the light will come out of it at that point :).
